Relative cabinetry prices: brand vs. brand (cont'd)
Comments (7)dreamojean: Thank you for taking the time to put this list together. I've spent months educating myself on the various lines, yet I am still not sure on a few things. You mention the Columbia cabinets in your descriptions, but it isnt in the list. Do you know where it would land in terms of quality / cost?...See MoreOrdering Conestoga RTAs: tips & tricks
Comments (44)@emilyam819, did you give yourself about 6 inches from the ceiling like @beachem did? @lam702 - did you demo your whole kitchen before you took these precise measurements? I only have one run where the cabs have to fit in between two walls. Everywhere else I have some wiggle room. But of course this run is my sink wall, the only one I'd like to keep intact as long as possible. I was thinking that I'd order the cabinets so they're about half an inch smaller than the run (based on my measurements with the current cabinets intact), just in case - and if there ends up being a half inch gap, I'd put it next to the blind corner where it won't be seen. (See pic) @Sombreuil, this is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I'm going to email Jim about it today. THANK YOU! @Sophie, you're so right. I have a few handy men in my life who have installed cabinets before so I'm trusting them with this. I think it also helps that I don't have many (any?) walls that need to be scribed to (and only 1 upper). But there's no doubt that installation needs to be on point for a good-looking kitchen!...See MoreCabinet Stress - Import Ply vs. USA Made Boxes, is there a difference?
Comments (38)At my last job, I was setting up a showroom. I had the opportunity to carry any brand of cabinet that I wanted. We needed an entry level line. I had many distributors courting me, bringing samples etc. So, I had several of the Chinese cabinets sitting around for a while. A few stank so badly right out of the box that they went in the trash immediately. Most of the door samples had poor joinery, poor sanding, and an even worse paint finish. From 3' out they looked average. Closer, or touching them, yech. Fabuwood was the best of the lot. Damning with faint praise. Their Chinese knockoff Blum hardware wasnt installed with the greatest precision, so it got slightly bound up when you pulled the drawers in and out. The joinery was much improved over their brethren, but when I pulled the "plywood" shelf out that looked so good on the surface, it had skips and voids in the ply internally. Those had been filled in any of the exposed plywood edges of the boxes, but not the shelves. And when I cut it apart, the story was the same. The fake Blum hardware on the doors was actually pretty good. I had no problems with it over the almost 3 years that I left the sample sitting in my showroom---to sell against I went with Aristokraft for my entry level line. It was actually cheaper. And made in Indiana. Yes, Chinese hardware on it too, but at least not the fake Gucci purse type. No name fakery attempted. I never sold their plywood version, as it is a completely unnecessary marketing hype upgrade to get a good quality cabinet. The furniture board construction was a fine cabinet for the money at a decent price point. Realky, if you are looking at Chinese sourced anything because of budget, you need to wait and save more. A kitchen project will quickly get you in over your head on the budget front. Permanently installed cabinets is NOT where you need to save pennies....See MoreKraftmaid Vantage vs Waypoint cabinets
Comments (24)Legacy is a lower end line...Presidential series is their super beefed up construction option, if I remember correctly. I used to sell Legacy years ago. The contractor works for you...is it in his contract that HE supplies the cabinets?? On one hand, I can understand why some contractors pick certain dealers to work with. They work well with them, trust them to get the order right....etc. Delays can cost a contractor a lot of $$$$. On the other hand, contractors need to find a good, better and best cabinet line options or they are limiting their clients on cabinet choices. You should tell him that at a minimum you want a semi-custom line. Semi-custom lines have better finishes. Legacy is a lower end line with several box construction options (ie Presidential). I wouldn't use that line...unless you are on a budget. But my guess is, presidential and semi-custom wouldn't be that far apart in price. My only other advice is on the espresso finish. It became popular about 10-15 years ago when Starbucks stores remodeled with all espresso finishes....to complement their 'coffee theme'. That style is now hugely dated. Consider another stain. If you want something more timeless, go with a medium brown....not too red or yellow. I've not seen the Legacy charcoal but assuming its a dark gray? or almost black? The gray trend is also starting to slide. But if you love it....go for it. It's your house....See MoreUser
