Help me choose some colors here (granite, backsplash, cabinets)
Comments (37)OK, here are the pics after the cabs were stained. We went with a deep mahogany to coordinate with the tiles, granite and backsplash. The results have really exceeded our expectations. My contractor says that the shine of the top coat will tone down over the next few weeks. Note: I have many skills, but photography is not one of them. So please excuse the crappy pics :) The stain is really a dark brown/mahogany -- not black as seen in some of the pics. Here is a picture with the flash on -- shows some of the brown tones...See MoreWhite soapstone backsplash and dark antique copper machined hardw
Comments (11)I have some dark ("antiqued") copper kitchen and lighting hardware and am quite fond of it. In my case, I needed to match my naturally patinating copper countertops. The antiqued finish might not be quite as dark as the machined finish you speak of. (Every brand is so different, too.) I think the darkened copper is a much richer feel than straight black would be - it has a nice gleam to it where the light shines. Your choice will depend on how all the other colors and textures in your kitchen interplay, of course. Feel free to post pictures for the good eyes here to help you out. This isn't the best pic but it shows my pendants in the antiqued copper finish from Rejuvenation Lighting: Sounds lovely -- have fun deciding!...See Morehelp with backsplash! off white cabinets/chestnut granite
Comments (26)Hi Steph - I had been looking on your snapfish and it was the 2nd one I looed at - confusing, sorry... But above it's the first picture - it looks like a ceramic tile and has the flower in the middle - the one that on snapfish you said you liked. I'm not sure about travertine, but for marble, the honed finish is smooth but not shiny, while the tumbled finish has "holes" in it from the tumbling - and has a "distressed" look. The "little hands" pic w/ the glass border is very nice - and I agree that putting more glass in as accents might be too much. The idea of all glass is interesting - but would you do it all in the mosaic or pick one of the glass colors in the mosaic and do that in subway tiles as your "field" and still use the mosaic as an accent stripe?...See MoreTo granite backsplash or not to granite backsplash?
Comments (9)I don't like the 4" backsplash for the following reasons: - if you are doing a decorative tile for the rest of the backsplash, you are now decreasing and cutting off your design area by 4". - the 4" creates a little "shelf" that gets dusty, just one more thing to clean. - added expense to install the 4" piece of granite along your countertop. - people who say you "need it" to cover a gap between the countertop and the tiled wall just don't have good installers. My kitchen walls are extremely out-of-plumb, but my tile backsplash meets my granite countertop with no gaps cause I had experienced installers. - IMHO it looks dated, since the 4" idea was popular with formica in the '70's. I would only do a 4" backsplash if I were doing no other backsplash at all and just leaving drywall on the rest of the wall. And even in that case, I'd try to make it a little higher, like 5" or 6"....See Morebyst
