Nyssa Sylvatica 'Sheri's Cloud'
Comments (23)There are a lot of nice variegated dogwoods. I collected as many as I could find that had a visual impact. Here are the kousa varieties I had. Cornus kousa 'Akatsuki' - White margin, pink flowers, sensitive/weak grower. Cornus kousa 'Bonfire' - Subtle cream margin, not have as much visual impact. Cornus kousa 'Kristin Lipka's Variegated Weeper' - White margin, smaller leaves, weeping. Cornus kousa 'Lemon Ripple' - Yellow margin, similar to the more popular 'Summer Gold' Cornus kousa 'Samaritan’/‘Samzam' - White margin, most extreme wavy edges in sun, similar to 'Wolf Eyes' Cornus kousa 'Snowboy' - Very wide white margin making it stand out, slower grower because of that. Cornus kousa 'Summer Fun' - White margin, robust growth, big impact. Cornus kousa 'Summer Gold' - Yellow margin, good grower. Cornus kousa 'Sunsplash' - Yellow margin, similar to the more popular 'Summer Gold'. Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes' - White margin, good growth, first time I saw it was growing in some shade at Collectors Nursery in Washington, I understood why it was named 'Wolf Eyes'....See MoreGood Deal on 15 Gal Black Gum Tupelo?
Comments (12)I've bought quite a few trees during the early summer to plant in the fall. If you like the tree, I would just buy it, Black Gum's are not common nursery stock. Like mentioned above, keep in a filtered sun, or morning sun/afternoon shade spot until you are ready to plant....See MoreNyssa Sylvatica - Green Gables
Comments (17)Sara - good question on the pollen vs nectar. At least one website I found refers specifically to the male flowers as being the most important for honey production (in this case on Nyssa ogeche ): https://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/silvics_manual/volume_2/nyssa/ogeche.htm "The male flowers, in particular, produce an abundance of nectar"...See MoreNyssa Sylvatica - Black Gum - Tupelo - Pepperidge; Hedge???
Comments (10)Yes, Floral, the stunning beech hedges of Britain is what I am yearning for! I put in a European Beech hedge in my little city garden -- 5 trees make a spectacular, healthy 12' long x 8' tall backdrop for all my assorted gardening adventures, and gives the neighbor a little privacy. More gardeners in the US should use them--but they are pricey here. Ed--New England Wetland Plants (which no longer restricts itself to wetlands, but provides all types of native plants) sells Nyssa Sylvatica whips for reasonable rates, they are near Amherst, MA (I'm guessing you're Ed in Lincoln, MA). Also, you make a good point about seasonality and hedging ... beech holds leaves and becomes an ethereal bronze suggestion of a hedge, black gum has a clean drop -- admirable for a street tree. It does fruit and support lots of birds and bees, however that won't help in February ;) Personally I like a deciduous hedge but planting needs to please more than one ... food for thought!...See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
