Verdict on my Silver Cloud maple
Comments (3)i have a similar thing happening with a nyssa sylvatica which has suffered die back. In my case I am going to let it grow this year then prune it into tree shape. This is partially because every nyssa I transplant has a similar issue so i am just not going to move this one! Fat as the stump rotting... the wound just can not be a positive. Then again a wise soul on here reminded me bud grafted trees undergo a similar process. So i dunno lol. Um, how much do you have invested in the tree? Since your damage was caused by deer perhaps a replacement will do better. Can you move the bushy one this fall to a non prime spot and replace with another?...See MoreFinal plant list...anything not worth the space?
Comments (4)hey i am not impressed with Pinus sylvestris 'Inverlieth' ... little or no NOTICEABLE coloration [yeah i know will has a picture of one] ... how about one of the winter yellow ones ... like gold coin or aurea ... i am also not very impressed with Pinus cembra ... just not inspiring ... and why not Picea omorika PENDULA otherwise.. you will have many happy hours of foster parenting ... ken...See More2016 Tree Seedling Report
Comments (237)bet you didn't think I'd be jumping in on this thread. I admit sometimes - a lot of the time - I'm a lazy gardener. For various reasons this year I placed the most mail order purchases ever, and at the same time saying "never again". A perfect storm converged of a lot of things being available I wanted to try either for the first time, or the last time LOL. It was over 100 plants if you count the orders I got in late fall. I had ordered just a few seeds last fall but as the spring progressed, with a lot else on my mind like the trip to Cali. I just kept putting it off. And off. And off. Keeping the incoming plants alive was the focus. Finally I sowed some - gasp - in the last week of May! Germination rate wasn't great, but if these survive it will work out ok, because I only really want one Abies georgei and Dalbergia hupehana. Neat trees though they may be, I don't have room for a grove of them. BTW the rosewood is just sleeping for the night. It's actually growing really fast. Some old seeds of a Callistemon 'Woodlanders Hardy' that died in the first cold winter didn't germinate, I guess they had gotten too old....See MoreNyssa sylvatica cultivators
Comments (16)Here's a list of selections planted at Seneca Golf Course in Louisville KY as a grove or "orchard", since one intent is to compare characteristics all in one place with similar conditions and a second is to collect seed from superior parentage. Afterburner Autumn Cascade Caroline/Carolyn Chancellor Fargo Firemaster Firestarter Green Gables Gum Drop Highland Creek Majestic Northern Splendor Penwood Weeper Red Rage Salem Weeper Sheri's Cloud Tupelo Tower White Chapel Wildfire Zydeco Twist There are other unnamed selections in the grouping from fellow Nyssa-heads, as well as a couple individual seedlings and additional species. This planting was initiated in 2014, with support from the Louisville fellow who found and named Red Rage. Extra credit is due to the extraordinary propagators at Hidden Hollow Nursery, and other friends who have contributed plants to fill out this collection. I haven't been out to this site this fall yet. Should I get there before vacation starts October 1, I'll try to get some action shots to contribute to this post....See Morekrazyrabbit
