Bliss Parfuma, why is it, "Parfuma," if it's only lightly fragrant?

Fragrant rose choice for PNW
Comments (24)Interesting discussion - when I visited David Austin Nursery a few years ago, I asked the manager, Michael Marriott, which rose he thought was the most fragrant of all - he though Jude the Obscure was a top contender. My 3 have done very well in SW British Columbia, and I would agree it is extremely fragrant - unusual very pleasing "guava" fragrance. Not the most florific though, but has not gotten BS or mildew when unsprayed. Still have to rate Fragrant Cloud at the top, and Double Delight. A lot of other Austin Roses are quite fragrant, but not as powerful. Many of the Kordes Parfuma roses have disappointed - not one bloom of Earth Angel opened properly in 2 years. Dark Desire was gorgeous at the Kordes site near Hamburg, but did very poorly here, small blooms, not opening properly. (that being said, most of my best bullet proof roses are Kordes, like the climbers Golden Gate and Laguna). I had abandoned Chrysler Imperial and Mr LIncoln in the 90s because of disease, but just planted some this year to try them again for the fragrance. Another one that I just love, and is great in PNW climate is Stephen's Big Purple - extremely fragrant, floriferous, trouble free. Re Julia Child - once in a while it seems quite fragrant but often not impressive. Lady Emma Hamilton and Charlotte - very fragrant, perform well. Munstead Wood - to me the best of its type - rich dark red, OGR type bloom, fragrant - there are several similar Austin roses - Wm Shakespeare, Darcy Bussell - which are not as good and received a shovel prune. Jubilee Celebration - one of my favourites. When I asked Michael what David Austin thought was his best rose, he answered immediately - Olivia Rose Austin - which is why he named it after his grandaughter. It really is a great garden rose - only moderately fragrant, but beatuful bloom, floriferous, disease free without spray, and unlike most Austin roses, which are really largish shrubs, it is a well behaved and shaped bedding rose. Nice to read comments on fragrant roses from PNW gardeners - when I started my latest garden 6 years ago, the main selection criteria was fragrance.... and most are not as fragrant as advertised..but those that are are worth it....See MoreIf you can't wait to try "bliss "
Comments (18)Modestgoddess tipped us off that RU has Bliss (thank you!) & I'm already in the habit of emailing Pat about any rose of interest, listed or not. Emailed last week to ask if she's still shipping & she said yes, since her weather's been a bit cooler than usual lately, so she'll be shipping Monday. Like you, Lilyfinch, looking for a few more before the shipping season shuts down due to heat. Also have my eye on a couple in Heirloom's current sale - their long shipping time (7-8 days door to door) doesn't irk me as much as their stripping the foliage does, still undecided. If you're in the mood, encourage you to email Pat pronto as her shipping window may close any day now. Sue...See MoreThis may be part of why my potted roses from Lowes don't make it....
Comments (10)I think Lowe's has a 1 year guarantee. Maybe that would work on these roses. I was in our local Lowe's the other day, was looking at the roses. Just pathetic! Most were wilted, dried up, crying out for water. A guy who looked like a manager pranced up to me, all smiley faced and asked if I was finding everything all right - I said yes, but would you please get someone to water your poor roses? I am a rose person and it really bothers me to see those poor plants dying from lack of water. His happy face burst like a balloon and he gave me a blank stare. He pointed at a lady employee and said oh, that is her department. She apologized and said she has been really busy. I thought - doing what? Watching the roses die? Most of the ones on display were in death throes from lack of water. I strolled through the garden area later and she was watering - not the roses but ferns, etc. that looked just fine. Then they put the half dead plants on 50% or more off.....when they could have just cared for them and sold them at full price. Go figure! I haven't noticed roots like what you all described but will check. They are bad about mislabeling plants. I bought on another trip there a rose that had probably just arrived, looked great, beautiful buds. It is labeled Carefree Beauty but it most certainly is not. It looks like a pale pink double Knockout. Have seen the candy pink, pink blush, more like a single, but not one like this. And....the other day it produced a bloom that is half red/half blush pink. I have heard of KO's that occasionally do this. So who knows what it is? Its pretty - healthy and is going in my pink bed - and I WILL check the roots! Comments (11)zz, I just planted a Savannah on Multiflora and it looks great. I had one two years ago which was own root, and I liked it pretty good, but last spring it died before it ever bloomed. My new Savannah is on multiflora as is Zaide, anxious for Savannah to bloom, I’m impressed with what it’s done so far. For the most part I’ve been especially pleased with my Kordes roses on multiflora, well except for Summer Romance, but I hope that was just a fluke, I’m going to try it again! The one Kordes I have own root now that I really love is Dark Desire, I’ve got two of them, third season, they’re ready to bloom, can’t wait! I have Plum Perfect, Crazy Love, two Beverly, and two Poseidon all on multiflora. Along with Savannah I just planted Solero and Bliss Parfuma, which are on multiflora. There’s so many others I would love to have! My Quicksilver is on Dr. Huey. I forgot, Out of Rosenheim is own root, second season. Which Kordes are your favorite?...See MoreSoFL Rose z10
