The Farmer's Cottage
In JGSLA’s first completely remote project, the client provided us with hand drawn dimensions of their space, a couple dozen photographs, and a small video. From these resources, we were able to draw up several concepts that met their desire to entertain outside and create a bold statement for the entrance.
The concrete walkway jetting out into asphalt driveway, extended the home’s “welcome mat” to friends, family, and employees. The owners wanted their home to be approachable and visually open with room for entertaining. Tall water columns framed the entrance and created a sense of coolness in the sweltering temperatures of the inland valley.
Wooden privacy screens made out of old peach staves were installed in front of the master bedroom windows. They were left with a raw edge along the right side to acknowledge their history in supporting the heavy peach filled branches. The fire pit overlooks a large lawn for their children that extends into their walnut orchard melding it into the home.
We still have yet to see the completed project in person, but is a true testament to the fact that we can design anywhere with the help of brave home owners and good communication.
