Teenage Bedrooms

The challenge was to meet the needs of a teenage girl in a very small room measuring just 2.2 metres wide x 3 metres long.

The key decision was to place the bed across the short width of the room. We chose an Ikea bed with built-in storage underneath. This works well but the dust does gather in the drawers! As the bed was 20cm shorter than the width of the room, we made a bed head at the pillow end of the bed. This is the same height as the window sill and provides a backrest when sitting up in bed and a handy surface of a bedside lamp, tissues, bedtime book etc. It also contains hidden storage (under its hinged top) and eliminates the need for a bedside locker.

A short, wall-mounted desk with drawers under sits between the bed and the wardrobe. This is 75cm high. A panel of pin-board 50cm high was placed between the desk and the painted mdf shelves over. The shelves are spaced to leave 33cm clear between each (the height of a lever arch file).

The painted mdf wardrobe is 100cm long and consist of a 70cm door and a fixed panel 30cm long. This fixed panel allows a narrow dressing table with drawers to be placed at right angles, between the wardrobe and the door. Using the same proportions as the desk, a zone of mirror 50cm high is placed between the table surface and the shelves overhead. The dressing table is lit with "Hollywood Starlet" lights.

The wardrobe contains a hanging rail at 180cm with 2 shelves over for rarely used or out of season clothes etc. A mobile office drawer unit on castors from Ikea provides useful storage for small items of clothing.
