Landscape Architects & Landscape Designers
Teardrop Meadow, Birchrunville
Ideally, our gardens are designed as a series of distinct ‘moments’ or experiences to be explored and journeyed to. Moments that are--grand, intimate, shady, formal, naturalistic, close-up, panoramic, open and hidden. To this end, our program visions the place as a stroll garden. The topography and already established ‘moments’ or events- the entry, service places, the house, pool, orchard, woodland, vegetable garden all present desirous opportunities for creating a cohesive, consistent composition which, in turn, melds into the wider landscape.
A variety of techniques work to do this. Primarily, because we believe in gardens that have plants, we sculpt space with masses of herbaceous plants. Lawn spaces are defined with sweeping lines. Woody plants are used minimally for specific purpose and very seldom sheared into artificial forms. While we use a wide variety of plants that supply heightened effects of nature with powerful four-season interest, we work to maintain a tight, disciplined pallet. This discipline creates a certain amount of repetition, a major integrative technique. As with plants, we work toward maintaining a simple pallet of materials for constructed places. The existing work includes random stone and our scheme further encourages its use, though in a greatly heightened sense. Pattern cut bluestone is specified in more formal spaces, astute craft is used to combine them.
Our program is simple in concept, rich in details.
