Nomad New York | Modern Details for a Classic Pre-war Apartment

We restored the intricate molding, wainscotting, and wood paneling of this pre-war apartment while adding key modern features like built-in speakers and recessed lighting. The guest bathroom and master bathroom both feature classic New York console sinks with nickel legs and a decorative nickel p-trap. The gooseneck fixtures, wall sconces, and beveled mirrors add to that classic New York look. White Calacatta marble wainscotting adorns the walls. Grey marble tile surrounds large marble slabs, highlighting the beauty of the material without the expense of full marble slab floors. Unique for New York, the spacious master bathroom allowed for two separate vanities. The guest bathroom maintains the same material palette but substitutes large format tile for the more expensive marble slab.

In contrast to the ornate pre-war trim, the client wanted a clean white kitchen with flat fronts. An integrated refrigerator, cooktop, and built-in oven complete the minimalist look. Chrome ladder pulls provide visual interest in an otherwise understated white-on-white kitchen. The large kitchen island creates ample counter space.

The project provided the opportunity to create a blend of modern and traditional styles to create a modern Parisian chic in the heart of New York. Haussmannian trim details blend with a modern minimalist kitchen and the understated elegance of a classic white New York bathroom.
