Kitchen floor? Go with a cork floor

Have a kitchen floor that needs to be redone? Consider cork as the go to flooring. Cork floors have come far since its retro days, picking up a new veneer that can do fashionable and chic with flare. Technologically savvy, yes that is cork flooring and its manufacturing process. It’s able to compete on level with hardwoods, stone, ceramic and vinyl and make its own impact.

The kitchen is an area that needs a floor that is both comfy and durable, but still able to handle moisture. Cork does all that and more. Made from the bark of the cork oak tree, cork is 100% sustainable and recyclable so no worries on the ecological impact, you’re actually helping the environment by installing a cork floor. Yes, that’s right. All cork products are made only from the bark of the tree. Carefully stripped every decade or so as permitted by law. This preserves the life span of each tree and also gives it time to regenerate. Just think, forests of these trees still stand today, and in truth will outlive you and I.

The cork oak, of course, grows mainly in the Mediterranean region, so you’ve got an area that’s either really hot or has limited rainfall. The cork oak thus developed the ability to stave off open flames and retain the water it needs for life. This translates to a floor that is fire retardant and water resistant, while also able to ward of wood rot, mold and mildew. In the living tree that’s a wonder. On your kitchen floor these attributes raise the level of functionality to par excellence.

Corks cellular structure is similar to a honeycomb, only its millions and millions of minute cells that are airtight. This creates a material that is not only buoyant but also able to function similar to memory foam. Unlike hardwoods and stone type flooring, step on a cork floor and it will provide a ‘give’, compressing with the pressure. Release the pressure and cork bounces back to its initial shape. You get comfort and cushion, a blessing for feet, joints and back. And since we’re in the kitchen, long periods of standing on a cork floor doesn’t fatigue you as easily. Cook. Create. Enjoy.
