Gym room flooring

Cork Flooring Is Gym Flooring For Your Body

Thinking about adding a gym or exercise space to your home and trying to figure out what style of flooring material will work best? Well, cork flooring is a an option to consider for your home exercise room as an alternative to wood, carpeting or some other synthetic material. Many gyms, exercise centers and yoga studios use cork as their flooring of choice. Why? Because cork flooring comes with nature-made benefits that prove a positive plus on your body. Too much stress on joints can in the long run cause damage and discomfort. With a cork floor, a material that has a certain amount of give to it, your joints will be cushioned as the cork floor itself absorbs the shock impact. Cork can handle high-impact exercise as well as heavy weight due to its resilient and flexible qualities.

How is this possible. Well, that comes from the very cellular structure of cork itself. Programmed with a honey-comb like structure, the hundreds of millions of chambers are sealed air-tight. This gives cork the ability to compress and decompress much like memory foam, which accounts for its ability to absorb impact shocks and sounds. Nature made it a natural insulator. Drop a heavy object on a cork floor and instead of a loud crack you’ll get a muted thump. Use cork as insulation on the walls and you’ll have a sound barrier. Can you believe that, soothing quiet rooms where the everyday noise from outside is eliminated.

That’s not where it stops, cork is a thermal barrier as well. Put cork on your floors and feel the warmth, a distinctive difference to hardwoods and stone. Again that honey-comb structure provides a barrier against cold under-floors. The surface retains warmth and adds to the ambience of a room. Cork actively repels water, and as a result is resistant to mold and mildew. Standing water may warp it over time, but unlike normal wood it doesn’t soak it up and become damaged. This makes it a great addition to the basement. Add a couple of layers of polyurethane over the surface as a protectant and you’ve got waterproof.

Cork is derived from a living tree, the Quercus Suber, or cork oak tree. Whereas all other trees are cut down to provide the material for construction, the cork oak tree need only shed its bark. Believe it or not, not one single tree is felled. Instead, specially trained workers, some of whom whose families have been doing this for generations, carefully peel the bark off the tree in sheets. Once harvested the tree is left alone to regenerate a new layer of bark. No harm befalls the tree and it is monitored to ensure that it remains healthy.

Cork by its very nature, provides some WOW factor benefits. As a floor, it works some amazing pluses for those who enjoy exercising in their own homes. You get comfort, warmth, less stress on your body and a cozier, quieter place to work out.
