Daniels Kitchen Remodel

The client remodeled other parts of the house in recent years, but the 80s kitchen remodel needed new appliances and some of the cabinets were original to the 1950s construction. The client decided to go the distance and gut the existing kitchen, remodel an adjoining laundry closet, and replace the HVAC and water heater, which were also due for updates. The original enclosed kitchen, usually the case the 50s era houses, needed to be addressed so removing a wall became the key to unlocking a new and fresh arrangement.

The client likes Asian influenced design but wanted a few contemporary details and a way to fit the ranch style of the original house. Choosing a beaded inset shaker style door made the bridge between these themes. As well, the architect suggested a bold step by using black and red cabinets surrounding a large island to give the design the look of built-in furniture and anchor the strong theme.

Since the kitchen centers within the layout of the house and is soaked in sunlight from several existing skylights, the architect aimed for a warm and intimate feeling with the choice of finishes. "Opening up the kitchen to the living areas but maintaining the definition of spaces makes the whole area feel larger. The new kitchen finishes also dress up the entire house now." says architect Steven C Randel.
