A no-grass solution, where big trees make it hard to grow grass. This garden has close to no flowers, but tons of color, provided by uniquely colored foliage. The border is custom concrete curbing.

Stepping stones in a minimal gravel paved area lead past two lounge chairs to the intimate dining area. The herringbone-patterned limestone patio dissipates into a lush planting bed filled with loose swaths of shade-loving perennials and seasonal bulbs. Beech hedging, and formal clipped evergreens, surround the space and provide privacy, structure and winter interest to the garden. On axis to the main interior living space of the home, the fountain, is the focal point of the garden. A limestone water wall featuring an engraved pattern of fallen Honey Locust leaves nods to the centrally located mature Honey Locust tree that anchors the garden. Water, flowing down the wall, falls a short distance into a pool with a submerged limestone panel. The light noise of the falling water helps soften the sounds of the bustling downtown neighbourhood, creating a tranquil back drop for living and entertaining.

This Birmingham Michigan condo was looking for a way to screen the traffic from Woodward Avenue. They wanted to keep the buffer natural but have it grow to become thick enough to filter out the light and noise. Since the site was some what shady and they wanted year round screening. We installed Nigra (dark green) Arborvitae. The will grow to form a living wall that will look beautiful year round and thrive under the canopy of the large evergreens surrounded by the existing ground cover. Our crew was very careful to not disturb either during the installation. Landforms Inc.

Our design team created a concept of a “Water-wise Tropical Paradise”, bursting with color, shiny textures, lush foliage, and small palm tree varieties. Turf was converted to garden beds, and low-volume, low-pressure drip irrigation was installed.

Plant Feature: Kahili Ginger: A lower area of the this Northern California Landscape Sanctuary has a touch of the tropics with the the intoxicating fragrance of the Kahili Ginger (Hedychium Gardnerianum) that bloom late summer. And the Red Abysssinian Banana (Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii') with its large dramatic red/green leaves. Both thrive in this landscape throughout the almost frost-free winters. Retaining wall of native stone matches the style and materials with those of the house. Plantings include Epimedium below and Leucothoe axilaris above with European ginger, and Fothergilla. Native Parthenocisis (Virginia Creeper Vine), harvested from the property, was planted to grow over the wall.

This photo was taken justs after completion of the landscaping. We renovated this desolate, weedy front yard by creating terraces with beatiful stone retaining walls. Then we added colorful, drought tolerant plants that grow so well in San Francisco's Mediterranean climate. We installed drip irrigation and concealed it with attractive ginger rock pebble mulch.
