If you google "faux fireplace" there's lots of ideas on how to use it without an actual firebox, if that's what you're thinking. Here is a Candice Olson design where she used a mirror and candles, but I think it would be even better with an antique surround.

We had wood burning, and while I very much enjoyed the sights, sounds, warmth of a wood burning fire, we converted to gas. I do not miss the dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the fireplace. While we had wood, we were able to cut our own firewood which was a satisfying project at our ages then. I suppose we could still do it now, but cutting, loading, hauling and splitting wood aren't very high on my list of satisfying chores these days - and ordering, buying firewood has become expensive. Truthfully, we don't use the gas fireplace that often. This sprawled out one story house (1955) isn't hard to heat with natural gas radiant in the ceilings. I have the fire going during storms, or for the ambiance occasionally and when expecting winter guests and wanting the house to feel welcoming.

Another consideration is convenient seating directed toward tv viewing..close enough ..and with tv mounted low enough to view without having to lay “back” and lookup...to view...sometimes a challenge in a big...tall room...never mind when there are multiple windows allowing a lot of sun shining in your eyes for daytime viewing

That sounds like what we did, as well. Went with the Xtrordinair 864 Deluxe direct vent for living room, the 564 version for bedroom and the Empire Carol Rose stainless ventless box for screened porch. We’ve ordered the Cimmaron Timbers LP logs for the ventless FP. House is still under construction so gas not connected yet and ventless not installed since decking not done for porch yet. The direct vents look good. Hopefully they will put out some heat. It was a tough decision as was type of stone and hearth height, mantel height, etc. We have worked through the details and think it will all be great. Good luck with your new home project!
