Pope Leo’s surgery, lung nodules, risk assessment

Many people have been wondering about Pope Leo’s lung nodule and subsequent surgery.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta suggested that people might want to fo to a site sponsered by the American Lung Association and respond to a questionaire.

I have a few questions for my doctors and I bet they are getting lots of questions.

I had the same surgery in February. I was stage 2B. 4 rounds of chemo & 8 immunotherapy sessions that I have completed 4 so far. I am cancer free & very grateful. It sounds like it was caught very early for the Pope. I wish him the very best outcome.

I hope it was caught early. I hope he gets better soon.

I'm not Catholic, but I really love this pope. Why do bad things happen to really good people when horrible people keep on keeping on?

@girlnamedgalez8a — I am very relieved to hear that you are free. What an ordeal! I hope you did not experiencd a lot of pain and discomfort, but it must have been painful and difficult. I can only try to imagine the anxiety that you, your family and friends must have felt. Thank goodness you are safe and free now.

May I ask — did you have nodules detected by happenstance on a scan or X-ray? Did you go to a doctor with symptoms?

I believe I just heard that women rank higher than men in the statistics. ???

And of course there is the pervasive myth that lung Ca is caused by “smoking.”

I have known non-smokers who have developed lung cancer.

I hope you continue to be Ca free and are continuing to live a happy and fulfilled life. I salute you and ring the bell for you, gale!

Yes, Pope Leo is a joy. He is a leader and a rare soul.

There is an established protocol for ”watching” pulmonary nodules. I wonder, if because of his status, global role, if this largely wait and see, observe over the years via scans was circumvented.

I wonder what percent of lung ”nodules” are cancerous.

Not all lung cancer is caused by smoking, but most is. In the UK about 15% occurs in non-smokers. So I wouldn't call that a myth.

I don't subscribe to his (or anyone else's) form of spiritual propaganda. But within the extremes of his version, he seems at least to be moderate on some issues and a person who has worked with sincerety and humility to improve the lives of underpriveleged communities. For that alone, I think he deserves my and everyone else's best wishes.
