Is putting restrictions on someone punishing them, changing their behaviour, or both?

I found my self puzzled by this quote: "[these restrictions] “are not meant to punish, but to change behavior.” " Does it matter what the restrictions are?

If you tell someone on your baseball team that if they join a soccer team that they will no longer be eligible to play on the baseball team , is that punishment for joining the soccer team, or incentive not to join the soccer team? If you prevent someone from going outside of a prescribed area with an ankle monitor because you want them to stop socializing with people outside that area, is it punishment, incentive, or both?

In my opinion, it's both, and pretending it's not punishment is lying to oneself. Others might say it's just a strong incentive, and if they achieve what you asked of them they'll get that reward (playing on the baseball team or getting to go outside the proscribed area). I guess they'll say that to make themselves feel better ;)

I think it depends on the authority of the person doing the punishing or incentivizing. One is punitive and the other is trying to be persuasive without being punitive.

And do the rules apply to everyone and not just one or a few?

I don't understand the last post to this thread? Thermasol offers a 5-year replacement warranty on all their controllers. Why would you pay to replace it? Maybe you had it more than 5 years? If so, then it's too bad it failed but how long do you expect it to last? I doubt you could expect a car to last reliably with no problems longer than 5 years, so why expect that of your steam shower. I have a PRO-395 that I installed 14 months ago. It just failed tonight. Not sure if it is the controller board or the heating element, but it stopped producing steam. Called tech support and they are shipping me a new replacement unit tomorrow and paying for the install, all at no cost. I am going to call them tomorrow to talk to them about the fact that it failed so soon. They are supposedly the best and charge a premium for their product. I am curious how they will explain that it failed so soon. Will update this post if they say anything interesting. Update: Spoke to them this morning and they are sending me a new unit, and pay for installation charge. One other thing. Someone in the tread above talked about making their shower with a 10 ft ceiling. Don't do that! That is just dumb, and will affect the experience of a good steam. If you ever want to make your steam shower bigger, do it in the length or width but never in the height. My house has 10 ft. ceilings, but my shower has a 7.5 ft up to an 8 ft. ceiling and that is plenty high enough. The 7.5 ft part is over the bench so the fact that it is lower there makes no difference because you are sitting down.

Out of the choices Above I'd say BM is your best bet. Behr products are too watered down and their white is more of a gray so that effects the way the colors comes out when tinted. Stay away from SW they are a bit better than behr but they over price for the amount of TITO in their paint as well. BM offers a beautiful color selection and has an exellent product. HOWEVER I would love to put Dunn Edwards in the running here. We have an amazing selection of nearly 2,000 colors (not mention custom color mathces we can do), a superior paint product and a FREE Professional Color Advisor service (that's me) . Plus we have a ton of "kill test" listed on our website and in our store comparing each of our products to the competition. (: but like I said BM is a nice choice!

Who are you buying them from? If it's a large independent dealer, you should be able to do just as well getting the appliances you want rather than the "packages" which are designed by the makers to make you think you have to stick with them so make them more money. Most appliance stores have a discount for contractors and interior designers. Usually the same percentage (10-20% depending on local custom, usually more in the 10-15% range). Sometimes, there will be more for one or the other group because of connections, volume, promotion, whim etc. Since you're doing a major remodel and looking at mid- to high- end appliances, I'm thinking you have at least a general contractor, or maybe a plumber/gc. Even if you don't, since you're buying a whole suite of appliances, the store may give you the contractor's discount anyway. If that isn't possible, you still have negotiating room. While the store may be locked into fairly narrow contracted price floors (as if they were selling fine art!), they have other ways they can give you discounts. They can give you a free dishwasher, for instance (a common occurrence), and/or free delivery and/or installation. They may also pay for an extended warranty, though those aren't worth nearly as much, dollar for dollar, as something tangible. They're more for emotional support. So, given that, I'd choose SZ/Wolf or Thermador. Thermador may cost less (depending on exchange) and it's fine. Wolf has great ovens, but there are a few potential problems (I think the jury is still out on whether they've 100% beaten an issue with the enamel). I prefer the layout of the SubZero refrigerators. If you're getting gas, I love the Wolf double stacked burners. I prefer Thermador's dishwasher to the Asko, which is what I think you get with SZ/W. That's without even considering Miele, Liebherr, BlueStar ranges, etc.

We bought Subzero, refrigerator and freezer, a large Wolf gas range and we got pushed into buying a Cove dishwasher. What a mistake. After 32 days, the dishwasher failed simply saying call service. We are in West Los Angeles, and there is only one company that does warranty work on Cove dishwashers, Box Appliance Repair. We waited two weeks for the first appointment and were told that we needed a new wash pump and it would take a week or two to get it and then they could schedule a follow up appointment. We pressured Cove and they expedited getting the pump so we only had to wait an additional 2 1/2 weeks. Today the technician replaced the wash palm and found that we also bad electronics. He replaced two circuit boards and found that a mechanical relay was also defective. We are now being told that once they get the mechanical relay they will schedule an appointment, probably two weeks away. So, all told we got 32 washes in before multiple parts failed. I told a friend of mine that I bought a Cove and he just started laughing. We have calls and emails into Cove now asking them to replace the dishwasher or give us our money back. I will post the outcome once this dishwashing nightmare is over.

I’m not sure that the examples reflect the question. If you have to choose between soccer and baseball, perhaps it is a time commitment? A neighbor’s daughter wanted to train with the cross-country team, as part of her soccer fitness. The XC coach said no, if you want to train you have to be on the team. (i’m thinking it had to do with school liability issues) For various reasons she couldn’t be on both, so she chose XC, and ended up state champion and earned a scholarship. So was not being able to do both a punishment? Or a choice?

A person on an ankle monitor isn’t prohibited from socializing with their ne‘er-do-wells, just from participating in nefarious shenanigans.

Another question is, does punishment or threat of punishment change a behavior internally, or just externally? Away from the threat of punishment, does the behavior occur, or does the person actually change the, I guess, desire, to perform the behavior?

i most often experience this on prix fixe menus. If I order the halibut they withhold the steak. I’d say that’s punishment.

I’ll admit I’m not fully understanding the question. In the sports example, are we talking about school level? A team may decide they require a certain level of commitment which they don’t deem compatible with academics AND playing another sport. Whether the kid agrees or not, I’d deem it neither a punishment nor an incentive, but rather a choice.

I’ll make another assumption with the ankle monitor: criminal? However limited the movement is, I’d generally assume it’s a step up from being in a prison cell. So it’s still a punishment like prison is but it’s also a priviledge, and keeping the privilege is the incentive to follow the rules.

That shiny new sports car, they have the nerve to want money for it. Is my payment punishment for wanting the car so badly, or is the car incentive to give my money away? 🙂

I think of incentives as something put in place from day one. The incentive keeps one from needing a consequence. I'm not loving the word punishment. It's not used much anymore. Consequences that work best are expected, natural outcomes of behavior that's not optimum. You don't come to practise, you sit out a game or more. In theory you are prepared so why would you play? Those that show premium effort at practise get a popcicle at the end.
