Comments (26)What a nice surprise to find some old friends here this weekend - Florence, I'm glad to see you're doing well - I think of you! We're getting a little break in weather today (spring has been cool, wet). I pruned roses a little late, then found critical deer had done my job over, which led to me pruning again to straighten up what they'd reshaped. Someone has to come to an understanding around here on who gets the final say on the roses :) My fault, I'd been lax in spraying repellent with the uninviting weather, now this afternoon I've got to get that done so it doesn't happen again. Comments (48)Hi Barbara, I've had similar concerns about position and feeling it in the butt. I'm taller, 5'6", but 1st of all, I keep the foot plate angled at the middle position. I've played around with the other adjustment and at one point tried bringing the foot plate in closer to the seat, but it did not feel quite right. When I'm sitting on the seat with my feet on the plate, it's not real tight, like you're crunched up in a ball, but ... picture a clock, with your butt in the middle of the dial, your back angled at about 10 o'clock, and the top of your knees at about 2 o'clock (I hope this makes sense) - that's my positioning. ANYWAY, about the butt thing ... I've tried lots of different techniques and I have to say I don't feel any of them in my butt like I do on the top of my thighs or the inner thighs (with your feet like a frog), BUT strangely enough, as I walk around during the day, my butt feels much more toned. If this is gain without pain, I'll take it! It did take about 4 weeks or so, at about 4-5x per week to start feeling something in the butt, but it's definitely tighter. I can't get over how well this machine works! Nothing I've ever done has toned my legs this thoroughly and quickly and (a long time ago) I did a lot of weight training. I do play around with a couple of sets of short, low reps and I like to do the frog position, feet & knees angled out, with both my feet flat and then a few sets with my toes up. Re the tailbone, I prefer to keep myself a little higher on the back board - I have a long history of lower back spasms, so I try real hard to keep my back flat and not arching, and keeping myself higher on the back board helps. Comments (13)I started working very young for neighbor that opened a drive-in place so I was the carhop & cook,so lot of running, he was just opening so couldn't afford 2 people. I worked 7 days a week 12 hr days. I was 14 at the time. I cried myself to sleep. Way before that I was only kid in school with "growing pains" my legs hurt a lot. I was very active, hung by knees from trees, rode bike 11 miles around lake we lived at lot of afternoons in summer.Had younger bros. helped take care of as mom sick a lot. Ice skated on frozen lake in winter. Then started working at young age. Well, fast forward to about 40, I had been a stay at home mom & became widow so had to do odd jobs & all the work at my house including yard. Leg pain was back. I started on 800 I.U. Vit. E. It worked & has for 29 yrs. My MIL had tried everything for leg pain & even had veins stripped & other treatments. I told her to try it. Worked for her. She went in to her dr. for something else & he wanted to know why she was walking so much better. She was in her 70's at the time. He said seeing was believing so he said he would tell his patients to give it a try. A yr or more ago news had report out that Vit. E was worthless. I thought I would try stopping it & see what happened. I survived the 1st night but felt kind of lousy all day, wasn't sure what was wrong. Went to bed that night & pain was so bad I had to get back up, I remembered that I had that pain before I started taking the Vit. E so I took it & laid legs on heating pad & had a rather miserable night. By the next night after having had 800 IU in morning, I was back to normal & slept all night. Some of these reports I wonder about, I think a lot of people in health care are interested in making money for themselves & don't want people to actually get well & put them out of business. (Drs. call it "politics") I"ve used Nature Made or Your Life & lately found Sam's club works just fine take 2- 400 IU at breakfast. Bottle has 500 in it & I think under $12. Comments (15)Hi mzmint, I'm glad you wrote again, since I have some questions. I've had so many foot problems in my life. Recently, a new one started up. I had intense stinging in my toes. I couldn't even walk. I have a wonderful podiatrist, who has always cured my problems, but he moved too far away. I foung an ortho doc who specializes in foot and ankle problems. He said I didn't have a neuroma, and sent me to PT for a generic inlay with a little pad under my metatarsal area. That helps a little. Then, a few weeks later, I developed horrible pain and stiffness in my metatarsal area. I limped badly. I went back to him and he took more xrays, offered neurontic, and that was it. I talked him into custom orthotics, since I thought the generic ones weren't working well. I got the $275 custom orthotics, and 4-5 days after starting to wear them, my knees hurt so bad I am actually using a cane part of the time! (I had knee surgery in July). So I've spent close to $1,000 at this doc's, and I'm worse than when I started! My question for you is: Did you doc actually feel a neuroma, or did he just go on symptoms? You mentioned some spenco pads you are wearing. Could you please explain to me where you put them on your feet? I truly feel this doctor, even though he's highly respected, is just not doing much for my feet. He wanted to give me the drug Neurontin. I want to give a brief response now before I have to runoff to someplace, but will be back later.
I am familiar with sciatica because I get that on my other leg. That is horrible. I call it my bear trap because it feels like my leg and down to my foot and big toe is trapped in some sort of a cruel bear trap. That is a nightmare condition. But this particular pain and numbness on my upper thigh looks like the outline in the diagram with the article I link to. It’s in that area. It does not go past my upper thigh and it is not consistent with the symptoms and presentation of sciatic pain. And also because I have experienced sciatica on my other leg, I can note the difference.
The other condition that several of you mentioned was IT band syndrome. Unfortunately, I have also experienced that particular type of pain. If I’m subtly walking, say a pill and I haven’t been exercising or walking, I get this tightening painful situation along my upper leg and maybe down to my knee. I usually noticed it on my upper thigh and it feels like some sort of cramp and I cannot continue walking uphill even a gentle slope if I’m out of shape without this pain. That’s not always present, but if I again try to suddenly do something and I’m out of shape which is usually the case because I have horrendous back pain and I am horizontal a good part of the time because verticality is problematic. But I think I know what the IT band pain is like. I think I’ve experienced that as I just stated and this is different.
As I stated earlier in the beginning post, this pain is the upper leg, lateral or outside of my thigh. It comes on after I have been standing for about an hour or sometimes even from walking. I’ve had several episodes of it. When I cannot get off my feet and the pain continues it turns into burning pain, quite substantial, burning pain and paradoxically as it sounds it is also a numb feeling. Again it feel so I could put a tack in my upper thigh and not even feel it. I’ve carefully read several of the descriptions of the nerve compression described in the link, and I feel very confident that this is the likely culprit.
As to the cause, I usually do not wear tight clothing because if I wear something like Levi’s jeans, which I used to live in it causes compression on my pelvis and increases my back pain. I have had a long-standing back injury and now have spinal stenosis and facet joint arthritis around L2 - L3 (lumbar vertebrae number two and three). That same vertebrae is mentioned as where the nerve that innervate the upper thigh tissue – – not motor, but skin and tissue — so I wonder if my injury around L2 L3 might be the cause of the pain in my thigh. I’m not doing a good job of explaining this I think because I’m trying to use speech to text with the iPad and I’m also speaking onto the notepad because I cannot use this application with HOUZZ. So I have to skip between Pages to see what I’m responding to and what I’m writing and it’s not accurate to make a lot of typos. Also, I’m uncomfortable right now so I’m just distracted.Teresafic wrote:

Thank you, teresafic.Your response is helpful. I have questions, but have to be someplace, so will ask later. I looked up the medication Lyrica and it appears that that is a lot like a type of gabapentin used for seizures and often used for nerve pain. I cannot take that because I tried it before variations and dosages, but could not tolerate the very weird feeling it was like my brain had been eaten by a brain worm. I couldn’t hold my thoughts together. I couldn’t think I felt ill and was really ZOMBIFIED. I gave us a good long trial of maybe a month or two and I just could not get any work done. I couldn’t function. The same with that tricycle antidepressant amitriptyline that they often use for nerve I couldn’t tolerate that either on lower or higher doses.
I will communicate this pain to my doctor, but apparently there’s no rush maybe it will go away. I can try to do stretches or exercises, but it hasn’t seemed to make a difference. I think it is probably from my Spine arthritis and stenosis is that is in the L2 L3 area. My doctor had wanted me to go to a Spine clinic and it’s connected with a university teaching hospital that I have not had good luck with before because it seems very well. I just thought they were really sloppy. I went there for several things and went to their pain clinic as well and they were really pretty awful so I don’t have confidence in that group and that’s fine clinic. And the other thing is the Spine clinic absolutely will not give any narcotic medication and I suppose if I ask, I’m looking like a drug seeker. I want pain relief not any type of altered state of mind. They use gabapentin and again I cannot tolerate that medication. It just makes me feel like I’ve had my brain injected with lidocaine so it’s a non-starter.
The other thing a lot of of these Spine clinics and places want to do is not so much diagnose. You is do a procedure like a injection of steroids and something else around your spinal canal. This excel can have risks. And if I end up in a lot of pain because of something they tried to do I’m not gonna get any pain. Relief offered to me except for that god-awful drug. In my opinion, Neurontin or gabapentin. For me that drug is awful. I understand it’s helpful to some people. I gave it a good try but cannot take it. So I talked longer than I meant to — anyway, thanks a lot for the feedback, all of you.
