I like my Shark Rotator, too. I had a Navigator for my mom’s place but didn’t like that as well as the Rotator. Do you use the rotating brush for your rugs? I know I’m not supposed to but I do occasionally, for the cats and crumbs especially if it’s been several days.

I have the Bissell green machine model 2156. I love it so much I gave one to my BIL, DIL and DD! this is my second. I have tons of Persian rugs and wood floors. It works perfectly. Has attachments and is cheap! I love having a canister I can see what’s sucked up and can wash everything after every use if desired. Canister is drying 😊

I also bought a Shark (moderate vacuuming in previous home) and it did a good job. I sold it to an acquaintance when I moved here (no rugs/carpets) and she said it was still doing a great job. I don't remember which model :(

I have 3 Sharks (2 different houses - Rotator and Navigator) and I'm planning on getting another. DS just moved out of his apartment into a home and I'm giving him one of mine. With one exception I like everything about them - fairly lightweight, love the attachments, the lift-away feature, the ability to get under the beds, LED headlights, even emptying the dust bin is easy (I just put a supermarket bag over the bottom). All 3 have the brush on - off feature which I consider crucial since I also have Persian rugs and several silk throw rugs. Two have suction control.

My only complaint is that I don't think any do a great job on just plain floor. Somehow they don't seem to vacuum up fine dust, at least not as well as a Swiffer cloth. So I'm considering a newer model that has 2 brush rolls.

It won’t let me edit my post above . I have the Bissell Zing bagless ( not green machine ) It is only . $99. It does a great job and does get up fine dust . It also is very light weight . c

I have a Meile canister. I think it’s 8 years old and still working like a champ. I have several Persians, hardwood and tile floors.

Another Shark fan here. But I'm sorry you don't want a cordless stick because now I can't recommend the Bissell I bought during Amazon Prime Days. One of my Sharks is also a cordless stick, and I was so appreciative of its light weight, illuminating headlights, and vacuuming ease that I wanted another for upstairs, where my longhaired cat spends most of her time. The Shark and Bissell clean equally well. The Shark has the advantage of a slightly lighter weight on top, and the Bissell has the advantage of four (!) headlights.

We also have and really like the Miele canister products. We'd had one that had lasted a long time and still works and would still be in use but for a tumble on stairway that broke off a wheel in an unrepairable way.

We got a replacement that has an electric (rather than airflow) powered brush. It really does a job on the carpet areas. The hard floor attachment also does an excellent job. They're expensive and might be overkill for a small apartment.

Anything with a bag over anything without a bag, as far as I’m concerned!

In the bag vs no bag matter, Miele canisters have a bag but also a separate and changeable filter to remove dust particles from the exhaust air. The regular exhaust filter seems to do a good job but a HEPA filter model is also available for a few more bucks.

People don't realize that many vacuum products suck up dust but then blow it back out into the air. In a nod to food's comment above, I suspect bagless models are especially guilty of that.

I had a Dyson and did not like emptying the canister. At all. It had a pair of washable filters, but that was cumbersome and cleaning all the nooks and crannies when it was apart was no fun, either. I have a $100 Hoover for which I buy hepa bags, and I much prefer it.

In the other house I have central vac. I won’t pretend lugging the hose around is not annoying, but beyond that it’s a joy. Quiet enough that not even the dog cares when I vacuum, powerful, and best of all the exhaust air all goes straight outside. It’s a bit much to deal with for small spills; that’s my chief complaint. I’ll probably supplement it with a stick vac of some sort. Which are generally bagless. Grrrrr!

Many years ago we bought a nearly new house that had a central vac system. As I recall, the hose was 30 feet long or more. My shorter than average wife found it difficult to handle and (as above) less than convenient for cleaning up the food morsels and other dry messes our then-baby and toddler aged children produced. It took up a large portion of the coat closet where its storage was set up to be. It's true, it was quiet but for the whooshing sound. It was REALLY noisy in the detached garage where the motor and filter cannister were mounted.

We stopped using it after just a few months. That was when we bought our first Miele.

Do bagless vacs have much else in common ... with gossips that pick up the dirt - then spread it around vigourously?

I have a several-years-old Shark Navigator with a cord that still works pretty well. I have to use it with the brush engaged, though, to clean the bare floor. It doesn't seem to do that well for some reason.

I have a cordless Dyson Detect and what a waste of money that was. I can vacuum the same bit of floor over and over and over and it still won't pick up the dust. It has been that way since it was brand new.
