Vacuum cleaner recommendations?
Comments (15)Thought I would report back here. I ended up ordering the Shark Rotator Pro From the TV commercial, And got a free Shark Steam Mop with it. I also ended up springing for the extra attachments. So far I love it! And because I am who I am, I felt the need to justify spending the money. I vacuumed a section of my bedroom carpet, running the Hoover over and over it Until the light turned green, Then went over it a few more times. So it should have been clean, right? WRONG! I went over it with the Shark, And was amazed, shocked and embarrassed at the amount of 'stuff' that it picked up. For years, I have used things like Pet Fresh carpet deodorizer, etc, because I usually have at least one, Sometimes two dogs. I have carefully followed the directions, Leaving it for a bit, then vacuuming it up. I thought. But from what this Shark picked up, I guess the Hoover picked up very little of it. And while the Hoover is self-propelled, it is heavy enough to be hard and awkward to handle. The Shark is amazingly easier! So, so far, I am thrilled with my purchase! It hasn't tipped over yet when I'm using the hose. (Using the hose on the Hoover meant constant tip-overs). And I love the attachments! Haven't tried the steam mop yet, Maybe later today. Of course it remains to be seen how long it lasts, But the 5 year warranty puts my mind at ease. Rusty PS, Again, I thank y'all for your input, I appreciate it a lot. Comments (1)The SEBO Felix should work fine for your situation, so I am not sure what is wrong. It sounds like all you have are floors, so use the parquet floor attachment on the floor. This will pick up the litter, fur, etc. much better than the powerhead. If there is litter dust left behind, you might want to make a quick swipe of the area with a dust mop or "swiffer" type mop. You might want to invest in a covered litter box. Another suggestion would be to put something around the litter box like a rug, so the litter stays put. Cats will also have to walk on it as the exit the box. All you have to do it remove the rugs and shake them outside. If you do have allergies, I would suggest that you do vacuum your furniture regularly(at least once a week). The only time you would not is if you have hard furniture or something like leather, vinyl, etc. Go ahead and vacuum your mattress also. When you remove your sheets, to wash, just vacuum your mattress. A once a month mattress vacuuming should be fine. Another suggestion could be to keep a soft broom and dust pan in the litter box area and sweep everyday. Or, purchase a stick vac for the area and do a quick area vacuum daily. Let's face it, having pets requires more work. They also bring great joy. There really is no need to purchase another vacuum, to replace your Felix. It should do the job really well....See MoreSmartstrand vs Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Comments (7)I had my original Dyson 07 animal vacuum for over 13 years and loved it enough to replace many parts over the years, but it was beginning to go downhill. When I found a new top of the line Dyson DC41 @ 25% off after Thanksgiving, I jumped on it. Received it a few days later and was thrilled with it. A few weeks later, purchased new carpeting--the Mohawk's Smartstrand for our family room, hallways and bedrooms. Had it installed about a week before Christmas. Disclaimer: I do NOT recommended any home improvement projects right before the holidays. Not sure what I was thinking :-) That evening I whipped out the vacuum and couldn't believe how difficult it was to push. Literally stained my back. The carpet was dense, but not super high like a shag so I thought this was an issue with the vacuum. I couldn't find anything regarding the Dyson having an issue on thicker carpets and after spending about 20 minutes, it finally occurred to me to do a search using the key words Mohawk, Dyson, vacuum, and problem. Bingo. I was crushed when it hit me that there wasn't anything I could do, including leaving the vent open on the wand, to make it work. I was going to have to let the Dyson go and, as far as I knew, there wasn't another vacuum that came close to its level of performance. I read everything I could find regarding vacuums that performed well on the Smartstrand, including Mohawks recommendations (short list on Mohawks site--which they seem to have created after talking with some popular/ mainstream names. After more research, I still lacked a firm recommendation. The only name that stuck out: brand Riccar , series name Brilliance. Price tag (0ver $700.00) was a deal breaker--I thought Dyson was up there. After getting by with a Eureka for a week, I knew that I had to find something else, so I contacted the owner of a local vacuum store (small business, one owner/operator with about 20 years experience. Luckily, he had recently become aware of the Smartstrand issues and had helped a fellow Dyson lover the week before that had the same issue. His recommendation: the Riccar Brilliance. Price tag was slightly lower (around $600.00). He gave me a brand new one to test drive for a couple of days and I couldn't be happier. It actually works better than the Dyson in terms of cleaning multiple types of floors, especially the Smartstrand (on extra high level) and is made of higher quality materials. I called the owner on the second day and said I'd be keeping her. VERY happy, worth the extra $100.00 and is outperforming my Dyson. My family includes 3 sons, a hubby (general contractor), 2 dogs with light coats, 2 long hair cats--redheads, no less ;-) and a maroon-bellied conure. I'm a clean freak, so this combo is beyond challenging. I am skeptical of people that write long recommendations like these and am only doing so because it may save someone else from spending as much time going from site to site looking for something that will not only work on the new smartstrand, but make letting go of their well loved Dyson pain free and because I am avoiding a huge pile of laundry...never ending. I'm a teacher, have no affiliation with Riccar or any other businesses. Try going with a local vacuum shop, borrow the Riccar and try it out. It will cost you nothing but a little time. Hope this helps! Julianne This post was edited by annieoakli on Thu, Jan 10, 13 at 5:37...See MoreGood vacuum cleaners for people with multiple pets?
Comments (21)Like Kittens, I have an 8lb Oreck and am very happy with it. I've had it since '94. It's needed new brushes and belts from time to time, and I've used it a lot. Pros are that it is light and adjusts from floor to floor- from thick carpet, to tile, to low nap rugs. Cons are that it uses bags, and also that it does not fit into tight areas- like under the toe-kick of cabinets. If I only had hard floors, I would probably not buy an Oreck. I've considered that my next vacuum might very well be a Kenmore or Electrolux cannister with a power brush head. They seem to be expensive, but I've heard some good things about them. For the hard floor areas, I LOVE my old Big Green Clean Machine. I don't know if they still make them, but I LOVE mine for dry and wet vacuuming (as well as wet carpet and upholstery cleaning). When it dies, I might have to settle for a shop vac....See More- 4 years ago
