What did you buy this week at the grocery stores/stores
Comments (22)I still had lots of food in the house, but DH told me to go ahead and stock up since he'll probably be on the road for 5-6 weeks this time and the immediate future of our para-transit sytem is iffy at best right now due to budget cuts. (We won't know its fate until March 19. On the 22nd, we'll either have it or it's immediately gone.) So, hey, I'm no dummy. I stocked up. Trader Joes - greek yogurt eggs Cheddar cheese bacon almonds frozen haibut frozen green beans frozen mixed veggies frozen mixed peppers frozen naan butter canned diced tomatos quinoa mustard Regular Grocery Store bread Tortillas raisins black beans lentils canned tuna (my lucky day - albacore at .79 a can!) 5# chicken breasts (on sale at .99 a pound!) 2# pork bag of baking potaotes 2 cucumbers 3 onions 2 gree peppers # asparagas quart strawberries 1/2 gal milk canned mixed fruit # bananas # mushrooms garlic limes flour olive oil freezer bags pinto beans # coffee 2 boxes tea bags On the clearance shelf, we found organic pommegranate juice, V8, cherry juice and peanuts for $1.00 eash. The store isn't going to carry them anymore. So we got two each of those. And I had coupons for two free bottles of laundry soap that expire at the end of the month, so I got those now. Total - too much. OTOH, I'm set for another 4-5 weeks except highly perishable items like lettuce or milk. (Althogh I have some canned milk if I really need it.) That doesn't include the things we get for DH to take on the road as I consider his road supplies separate from my grocery budget....See MoreDo you ever go to Restaurant Supply stores? What do you buy?
Comments (35)My favorite restaurant supply store find is my measuring scoops. I gave a set to Diana in the my favorite things swap - you can see a picture on that thread. Restaurant supply stores are good for getting substantial stainless steel measuring cups and spoons instead of the wimpy aluminum ones that bend or dent. Or the big thin spatulas that can be used for tasks like lifting a layer of cake after you have split it horizontally to add fillings. In addition to what others have mentioned, they often have the cake pans with straight sides instead of sloped which is nice when making layer cakes. Around here there are two kinds - the ones that sell mainly food with a bit of equipment and the ones that sell mainly equipment - everything from utensils to major appliances. Smart and Final and Cash and Carry are the food kind - they are under the same ownership but Cash and Carry is bigger with more specialized food. For example, our Smart and Final has a few kinds of Torani syrup but the Cash and Carry has the full line plus some other lines of flavoring syrups. The equipment ones aren't all equal either. The area that has Cash and Carry has about 3 of the non-food restaurant supply stores. One carries nicer more varied stuff than the other two. But all have at least the basics like the stainless steel sheet pans, good cooling racks and lots of utensils. All the ones around here are open to the public. You don't have to be a restaurant or have a tax ID. Here is a link that might be useful: Link to thread with picture of the scoops...See MoreSamples at the Grocery Store - do they entice you to buy?
Comments (30)Like Linda and Deanna I seldom sample foods at Sam's Club, etc., because it's mostly the prepackaged, high fat/sodium/who knows what/chemically enhanced convenience stuff. Frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, hot dogs. Ugh. Nope, I don't eat any of it. My small town independent grocery store has never had a sample that I can think of, LOL, and I did sample a couple of recipes at Trader Joe's but thought that I could probably do better myself. I will sample cheese, although I don't eat much cheese, because there's such a large variety that I nearly always find something I haven't tried. Karen, I like to shop places like Trader Joe's, the gourmet food stores, farmer's markets, kitchen places, LOL. I hate the "duty" shopping at my grocery store, things like laundry soap and milk. I get in and get out and never look for anything new or different, I have my list and that's what I buy. I feel the same way about shopping for clothes, LOL, so unless I need new sneakers or a pair of black slacks, I am NOT going shopping! I'd rather have a root canal than walk into a t-shirt place or souvenir shop. When I went to Tennessee to visit Elery's sister she wanted me to go to Dollywood and Pigeon Forge. I asked Elery to please not make me go, the only thing that would interest me at all would be the Lodge outlet! (grin) Now, a tour through the mountains? A hike in the National Park? The Lodge cast iron outlet? Oh yeah, I'd love it, but I'd have a breakdown after the first two souvenir shops selling t-shirts and key chains! So, samples? With a few glaring exceptions, I don't eat them or look for them, I get in and I get out. If I had a Central Market? Now there's a different story altogether. Annie...See MoreHow do you store a LARGE collection of spices?
Comments (137)Mine is 24" wide and floor to ceiling. It's built against one side of the fridge and it faces the range. I only need to take two steps to get at anything and I can see everything. It's not near windows so light isn't an issue. I cannot store things like spices in tightly organized spaces as I often have gunk on my hands when I reach for something (disorganized). These shelves hold all the spices -- large and small bottles -- including a row of Bodum glass storage jars that hold different kinds of salt, sugar, baking soda, tea, fancy sugars for guests etc. The Bodum canisters hold up really well and still look new after years on the shelf. I throw them into the dw periodically. Another benefit of the full wall treatment is that I can store my oils and vinegars here as well. I have a dowel to hang up towels and there's a space at the bottom where I have a clip for often used recipes. I need to add another clip there. I've also thought of adding a shelf above the dowels. It could be easily done but I'm waiting until I have someone in to add after market pull outs to two of base cabinets where I stupidly specified shelves....See More- 5 months ago
