A Pleasant Series to Stream

We're enjoying an older PBS presentation "The House of Elliot". Two's sisters left peniless by a philandering father have to support temselves. The use their artistic skills to design clothing and start what becomes a London fashion house in the years between the wars.

It's engaging, and a welcome relief from all the police procedurals and other grim fare. We've watched three seaons; I think there are seven.

Thanks! I happen to be at the library right now, trotted down to the DVDs, and Season 1 is coming home with me. Btw, next to it was The House of Cards Trilogy, the original British 3-season series from 1984 that is excellent.

For me, the absolute champion, never-to-be-surpassed series is Game of Thrones. Great acting, great writing, intriguing plots, and beautiful locations. True, it is very violent, so I - hating "blood 'n guts" - spent a fair amount of time peeking between my fingers with squinted eyes. That said, it is epic, a story of human foibles and weaknesses and occasional courage. If you can cope with limbs being lopped off, of everything that could go wrong being shown on screen, and if you can follow the convoluted plot and myriad characters - I recommend it. imo there's nothing else like it. The dragons! DH and I also loved Mad Men. We came to it toward the end of its run, so there was a lot of binge-watching to catch up. It would have been my favorite but for GOT. We've watched many of the above-mentioned shows, especially enjoying Foyle's War.

I hadn’t heard about the Vermeer film- sounds fascinating and I will watch that for sure! “Summer of Soul” is on my short list already; David Copperfield, too. A few more series come to mind that I recommend: two medical documentary series that I thought were excellent, “Lenox Hill” and “The Surgeon’s Cut” are on Netflix. For those that like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like, and I definitely DO! Another Netflix documentary series I recently enjoyed “This is a Robbery”, about the 1990 art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. I also enjoyed the Linda Ronstadt documentary mentioned above. And, not new, but certainly not-to-be-missed, “Hamilton“ on Disney.

2Katz, I’m not sure about that, but since it’s owned by Google, I would suspect so. The picture on my older Plasma is amazing. If you’re not sure, tell ATT you’ll be traveling and want to put the service on hold, there may be a small fee but at least that way you won’t have to pay for it while testing. There’s no contract for youtubeTV and you can cancel any time, plus it’s a month free if you decide not to stick with it. You just have to have a good internet service for it to stream well. I have Comcast’s mid range service (70/mo or so) and it does the job just fine. ETA: I just found this on their site: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3306741?hl=en

bpath -- Did I see that you watched "Book"? We bailed. So slow. And there's a second season? (Must just be us!)

Moved over to the few remaining "Chicago PD" we'd left for another day. Nothin' slow there!

We watched a sweet movie from the library: Royal Night Out. On the night of the end of the war, the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret convince their parents to go out on the streets and revel with the people. They ditch their escorts, get separated, and it’s about what might have happened that night if they hadn’t done what they really did, which was celebrate with a selected group of young people.
