Cilantro - What can I do with Cilantro
Comments (14)We grow a lot of cilantro and what we do with it is make Pesto....well technically it would be Pistou as we don't add the pine nuts. Yes I know pesto is made with basil but can be made from cilantro as well. You just add the cilantro to a food processor and drizzle in olive oil until it is a puree and add garlic as well and salt and pepper to taste. We dose it out on cookie sheets by the cupful and freeze it then bag it up. You can use it many different ways in cooked dishes or by itself. If you want cheese in it wait till you thaw individual portions. Try it, and you will love it. We do the same with basil in the summer....See MoreKnats hinding under my Cilantro like crazy!
Comments (12)If the infstation was mininal (only a few days until it explodes!) you could sterilize pots and such, but the methods I mentioned work within 5 days and you could be totally rid of them within 2-3 weeks if you have a yellow sticky pads placed at the edge of each pot. The Bt kills only the maggot larve. Spraying the neem, over the soil can help, but many of the bugs either dig into the soil again, or bounce out of the pot. You can actually see this action when watering. Using sterile seed startying medium is very important, and I can't stress enough about the sterile seed starting medium method to prevent the gnats. Depotting and soaking the roots could damage, weaken, and probably kill the tender cilantro roots. The methods I mentioned are 100% organic and quite safe. Bt is a bacteria that attacks the maggots and kills them. The life cycle is shown on one of the links I provided. Nope, moving the plants outdoors will just introduce more gnats to the plants. The gnats are all over my garden right now and can even survive winters. I used beneficial nematodes to reduce their numbers in my garden, and still see them everywhere. The only way to totally eradicate them is to apply the nematodes everywhere (almost impossible), and then followup with Bt. Because they fly, they simply go where they like and lay more eggs. Nasty bug and has destroyed many a commercial greenhouse profit....See MoreMy Basil Tastes Like Soap!
Comments (2)Maybe the variety you are growing just isn't to the liking of your taste buds. Try a different variety. I know a lot of people describe cilantro leaves as very soapy tasting. Seems to be an herb that people love or hate....See MoreFood Floof! Unpopular Opinions!
Comments (98)nicole & signet, my nephew's wife also hates the smell of coffee. yeonassky, pineapple pizza is a healthy combo. See: https://www.humnutrition.com/blog/bromelain/ ------------------------- amylou, I'm a complete paradox in that I love the smell of Citrus spray, but my system can't tolerate acidic foods. On the other hand, Sweet spray such as lavender, makes me nauseous & headachy, but yet I always need to sweeten foods to make them tolerable to my acidic system. ------------------------- Like you, I, too, never liked maple syrup (but do like mild molasses which is healthy). As i mentioned in another houzz post (but which probably confused everyone) is that the reason some subsets of people may like a grouping of foods other than the preferences of another subset of people, may be: Their being a supertaster vs. non-taster vs. medium-taster as per Dr.Bartoshuk's research Their having high blood sugar. My oldest sister has been diabetic for a long time, and she liked maple-sugar candies which i myself thought were nauseatingly sweet. My own system is too acidic and i have acid saliva. So i speculate that people with higher blood-sugar thrive on foods which are more extreme, whereas i myself do not. For example: I speculate that diabetics' "sweet saliva" causes them to like bitter chocolate, because their sweet saliva compensates and causes it to be "semi-sweet" (rather than too bitter). I think that diabetics' "sweet saliva" causes very-salty foods to taste "sweet and salty" (rather than overly salty) I think that diabetics' sweet-saliva causes sour foods to taste sweet 'n sour, which might explain why they might consider actual "sweet and sour" meals to be "blah". It's also why they may enjoy very spicy foods. Don't get me wrong. There are grey areas. For example, although i abhor very-bitter chocolate, yet I love burnt veggies, burnt potato chips, and burnt toast. The latter might taste too bitter to many people, yet i love it, even though i'm for the most part a supertaster. I think my 2nd sister may be a medium taster, because she likes very rich chocolate, and she does have slightly high blood sugar. I don't think any researchers ever explored the possible correlation between being a supertaster and blood-sugar status. For example, perhaps a Non-taster may be more predisposed to develop high blood sugar, because they need to "pile on the sugar" in order to taste anything?...See More- 24 days ago
