Cool front came through - finally, time for piddling!
Comments (8)I probably won't get to the piddlin' stage until sometime after Thanksgiving. Starting to line out some plants but it's been so ungodly hot that I don't want to divide the more expensive, less abundant ones right now. My son and I were popping clumps out of the ground the size of half bushel baskets on Sunday to divide. Finally we went and got my husbands sawzall with a long blade and started cutting. If you're not worried about your plant and you've got something that big it surely cuts down the strain of dividing that rascal. I wouldn't want to post this method on the AHS website on how to divide daylilies but since all of us here know how tough they are I'll admit to the hacksaw attack. We finally got a plumber into our house to start the plumbing. It took him five days to get the rough in plumbing done. One day for each year I had to wait to finally get one that we could live with and would actually show up. Now it's the electrician's turn to come back and finish his stuff. Then the drywall. I think we're actually going to start seeing some progress. I'm getting revved up for some real action to start. I guess there's actually a chance that I could be living in this house by next bloom season. I suspect this fall and winter will consist of redoing the woodwork, doors and staircase in the house. If anyone has any pointers on the easiest way to and what materials to use step forward and be recognized! Janet...See MoreHow much should a new water heater cost?
Comments (23)I live in a pricey Westchester NY suburb and just paid $2000 to install a new AO Smith hot water tank. I shopped around and all three licensed plumbers came in around the same. The guy we picked wasn't the lowest price but my hubby (a surgeon) liked the white hair on his head (read: experience). He was also the only guy who, upon entering our basement with the small stream of water, confidently declared it was a microscopic leak from an obscure spot under the tank. Sure enough, he pulled out a flexible flashlight and with us leaning down with our cheeks to the floor, there it was: a barely perceptible trickle of water. The other two first asked us to make sure it wasn't leaky chimney flashings, groundwater swells, etc. They were also much younger than our plumber by about 15 years! The way the hubby sees it, you pick your plumber like you should pick your surgeon: not someone fresh out of residency but not so old as to be unaware of the latest technology or regulations. So we contributed a couple of hundred to our plumber's retirement fund. Hooray for him and we are really happy with the work he did: new copper fittings and piping, soldered neatly with new gas and water valves placed above the tank and easy to function. We shopped around and went with the person we felt most comfortable with. Oh, and he came on Memorial Day morning to install this so we could have hot water for our family! (The other youngster plumbers were like, No Way.) Now isn't that dedication also worth the extra $? We think so!...See MoreBefore, after, pictures - BLUE kitchen, expresso cabinets.

CABINETS: Maple, plywood construction. Unknown Chinese manufacture. PAINT: SICO Sketch Paper in Pearl finish - 6206-21 BUDGET: 18K, and I installed the backsplash myself to save $800. Edge of backsplash (I'm pointing it out because I did something a little different!). I build the edge up to the ceiling line....See MoreWe had a Thanksgiving miracle
Comments (36)Thanks for the kind words about my kids! Im glad to hear all of the positive comments about my granite. We love it, but I know it's bold. I was initially looking at the quartz marble lookalikes so this was a big departure but DH was adamant he didn't want Quartz and he's deferred to me on almost every other decision on the kitchen so when he had such a strong opinion I wanted to make sure he liked what we got. We went to a couple of places with no luck and thought we'd have to schedule another day to run to Salt Lake for the bigger slab yards when I remembered that one of the local tile and granite places had a branch a few miles from where we were. We stopped in and walked around the warehouse separately for a bit and then together and when I asked him what he liked best he picked the same slab I did. I knew we wouldn't have that luck again so we put it on hold! desertsteph- I'm reasonably sure that knife tray came from Walmart but I've had it for years and years so I'm not positive. I need to find a larger flatware tray since we just got a new set of 18/10 stainless and I'd love to find another knife insert too. If I see one I will let you know!...See More- 5 months agolast modified: 5 months ago
