Alouette - a brutal song enjoyed by English speakers, likely because of not knowing what the words mean.

Few know that among the functional origins of garden birdbaths in Europe was to attract small birds, to eat. Not to watch or admire. The appetite to eat them hasn't waned and many are now farmed.

I learned Alouette as a child. It was a good way to learn the parts of the body in French. We all knew what it meant in my area.

It used to be sung while plucking a bird for dinner by some. 🤷‍♀️

Some folks are surprised that food doesn’t just show up under plastic wrap in the grocery store.

Hahaha. Not a lot of bird plucking happened where and when I grew up. I learned the song and its catchy melody first as just the sounds, later in translation in French class.

We were taught Alouette was about the voyageurs and the gamebird larks that were plucked and cooked for meals

I also know know why the Montreal Alouettes football team are called the Alouettes. It’s from an air squadron of WWIl. And of course, in this case it is pronounced correctly.

Alouette is a very old Canadian song. I’m not sure who wrote it.

Many people still pluck their own birds. It is not uncommon.

Catching them using a birdbath must be a European thing, though.

Where I am and spend my time, to say it's rare is an overstatement, maybe "unheard of" would be closer. Likely done by bird hunters I suspect, who in the urban areas of my region are also quite rare. Or maybe it's done by some practitioners of particular types of Asian cooking. Not anyone otherwise that come to mind.

So maybe it's regional or cultural.
