Curious behavior by some who start threads

When a person starts a thread and then later returns to see what comments have been added, there's a little green link below each new posting that says something like "Say thank you to Y". With Y being the person who wrote the new comment. If you click on that, I think the contributor gets an email conveying the gesture of thanks from the author (if their account is so set up). And a little notation is made after the post visible to all that says "X (the thread's author) thanked Y (the person who wrote the comment in the thread).

Does clicking on the option "Say thank you to Y" convey the thought "Thank you for contributing to the thread I started"? Or instead, does it mean "Thank you for agreeing with me"?

I think doing nothing with the "Say thank you...." is fine. I also think thanking all contributors for any comment (thanks for reading my thread and saying something) is also fine.

The selective pick and choose approach, to thank some but not others, seems petty. Have you noticed that? How do you see it?

(All contributors will receive a Thank You, whether you agree or not)
