Help! Need a Bird Forensic Scientist
Comments (10)No scientist here but my guess would be hawk. If they were immature birds, crows and jays will certainly pull chicks from their nests. About a month ago we had just returned home, casually commented the large numbers of robins in our yard and the neighboring yards. Not 15 minutes later, DH noticed feathers as he passed a window and on closer look - a hawk, probably Coopers, dining on a robin where we had walked through to our door just minutes earlier. Too late to save the robin, we left hawk alone and it spent close to an hour on the ground feasting. Not easy to watch. I have seen smaller hawks here making a dive for small birds at feeders - chickadees are normally the first to sound the alarm and there are enough trees, shrubby and dense plants for cover that the hawks usually aren't successful.... the robin was a different story. If you don't have adequate cover or places for escape you might consider not feeding for a bit until the hawk (if it is a hawk) moves on....See Moreplease help....baby birds hitting window
Comments (7)there are decals that you can buy that are almost invisibe to you but realy reflect colors to the birds. I have a kitchen window that was a big bird strike area, since the decals...no strikes at all. I will try to find a link or info on them for you, only about $5.00 for a pack of 4. (also can move them from window to window as the seasons chang and different windows become strike areas).Mine are maple leaf shaped and transparent, but they really work. Comments (5)Trickyfingers, I was using a syringe, but find it much easier to use the other end of a seafood fork. It's shaped like a post hole digging shovel, but really tiny.lol It;s now eating a mixture of dog food mixed with poke berries. I also feed it cut up grasshoppers, cabbage worms, crickets, moths, sow bugs, and meal worms dusted with pulverized oyster shells. It's not making any attempt to eat without me shoveling food in it's mouth. But It's getting much stronger to the point where I actually think it's going to live. :) Still no response from the rehabbers. I think I'm on my own here. But hopefully it will be flying next month? :) Laura...See MoreNeed help saving baby birds, please!
Comments (6)Put some branches to cover it. The mother bird will probably return. It is more or less not true that birds will desert the nest if you handle the birds....however, I don't know about interfering with the nest. If she does return....stay away from the area completely and it will be less likely that she will leave....See More- 9 months ago
