Absolutely clueless. I don't even know what it's meant to show. Are those marks flames? Tatters? Fur? Is there meant to be a face in the U or is that just me?

Nope. Failed again. I saw 'burning gold' which is a phrase in William Blake's Jerusalem. But it seemed unlikely in an American puzzle.
