You can use a large sponge, such as you might for cleaning up the deck of your boat, but don’t have it too too soft. Natural sponge has a little bit of silica in it and can add a bit of an embrace of which might be good.

Do you want the rubbing friction action from some sponge work, but also the chemicals in the solution. I usually have to use something a little bit more abrasive than just a sponge or a large square handheld brush.

You can try a worn out scotch bright (that green scrubby pad stuff) but if it’s too new, it could be too abrasive.

Since you’re a boat owner, I’m sure you have some experience with cleaning and understand what I’m referring to. You don’t want really afraid too much if you can help it because that made me repainting.

If there are too many nooks and crannies to get into and even a hairbrush won’t work, I might resort to a mild pressure washing. I don’t mean the gas powered things, but I mean the $99 pressure washers electric that you can get at a box store. You can use plain water with this. HOWEVER, these power washers even the $99 ones can cause you to rip a hole in your pine or whatever wood so read the directions carefully practice a bit if you haven’t already on some lumber or old wood so that you Get good at spraying with a little bit of pressure but not too close and not on a very concentrated stream so that you upgrade the wood. And of course, you never wanna hold the pressure washer string in a spot for very long because you will make a hole in the wood or cut it.

There’s probably a lot of YouTube videos on nothing. I bet you’ve got some understanding of how they work. You probably own a couple.

I would rinse after I use any solution

Let it dry really well (good luck this summer) and if you’re going to paint it, be sure that is bone dry before you put paint on and I would use a primer before I used any exterior paint.

That looks like something that you can just wash with a simple solution and one of those good size sponges real sponge.

How about fine sandpaper?

It’s up to Foas, of course.

Sandpaper would not clean it as much as abrade the paint.

I'd use a power washer but don't get the wand too close.

I’d use a soft brush with a mild detergent. You can alternately use hand circulation motion or straight back and forth with just enough force to clean and not stripping the paint.

For a job like that, what I would do (and have done) is put hot water in a 5 gal bucket along with a handful of powdered Spic n Span or powdered laundry detergent. I have both here (Tide for laundry). I would use the larger soft-tish brush with about a 2' handle that DH uses for car and truck rims and their grills. If there is any mildew at all on those pieces I add just a spash of household bleach - it doesn't take a lot. Or I might mix all up, hand to DH and put him to work. Of course the garden hose would be close at hand for rinsing,

My window sills are dark brown and pick up a load of pollen this time of year, So does my deck and I can find bird poop, all kind of things on it. The deer have even used the stairs and gone onto it - I'm growing a few tomatoes there that wouldn't fit in my tomato planter (deer protected) and they do like tomatoes. Fruit and foliage.

The overhang to our one story house is deep - at least 6'. It's lovely - I can walk the perimeter of my house without getting wet in the rain. To keep things from looking dark from the inside out, the underside of the overhang is painted white. I wish someone could tell me why it gets dirty but we join forces, scrub and rinse it about every other year and both get wet doing it, Using the above 'recipe'.
