Today I met the Jujube fruit - dried, in a new nut and dried fruit store in my SIL's neighbourhood. I'd never heard of it before; the only "jujube" I knew was the gummy, sticky candy.

Jujube fruit are ovoid and a kind of rosy mahogany colour when dried, and they had a kind of unpleasant spongy texture and a small pit inside. Apparently they're full of vitamins and minerals.

Not my cup of tea, but something new to me - and it's always a good day when you learn something new.

Interesting-- never heard of them and also only thought this post would be about the movie theatre candy ( as I associate it).

Looking at it, I thought it looks like dates, and when I googled it, it says "Jujube sometimes jujuba, scientific name Ziziphus jujuba, and also called red date, Chinese date, and Chinese jujube, is a species in the genus Ziziphus " ,,,and so on, ......

I don't think I've seen them anywhere around here.

I've not seen those, but the Grocery Outlet store near my house has a wide variety of dried fruits, and I like to keep them on hand. Recently I tried dehydrated watermelon and liked it a lot, but dried cantaloupe is my favorite, along with mango, of the ones I've tried.

We get a lot of dates here, and so I always have those on hand as well. If they get too dried, I have to soak them in something, like brandy or Cognac.

Chills -- sorry, checked online, only the one location of Agrusa in Troy. Hope I didn't steer you wrong. Willyt -- I really want to grow one of these trees, in a climate where they really probably won't grow (although there is conflicting info out there on it). I figure if I can start some from seeds, that will give me some "free" (well, almost free) plants to mess with. I've already ordered a "Mango Don Que" plant from Burnt Ridge for next year, $27.95. But, if I got some seedlings to grow, I figure that will increase my odds for SOMETHING to survive in my climate (maybe!!??), and I won't feel quite as bad killing some "free" plants versus a plant which costs me almost $40 when shipping is figured in. Arthur, thanks for the info. And your are sure right about the fruit flies -- put the ones I bought into a bowl on my kitchen counter, and fruit flies appeared with hours. Dennis SE Michigan

Lucky_p, well, spraying jujube tree when beginning to bloom is a very common practice among local farmers here in Saudi Arabia. According to many farmers, as soon as jujube begins to bloom, they are attacked by an insect and I think it is the fruit fly not 100% sure. These flies lay their eggs in the bloom and when later they hatch inside the fruit :( so the fruit is damaged and it will not help it if u spray a hundred times. In short, frequent spray in hope that bloom is free of fly eggs. I'm assuming your jujube is a Thai Giant, since that's the only variety I've seen for sale in my part of Florida. I don't know anything about other varieties. Those little buds you see will turn into tiny yellow flowers, which may, or may not, become fruit. My largest jujube has been flowering like crazy all summer, but isn't producing any fruit. Last January, this tree produced lots of fruit. What's happening now has me confused. I've never seen a fruit tree absolutely covered with blossoms fail to produce fruit! If your tree is anything like mine, you'll be surprised at how quickly it will grow. I hope yours has plenty of room!

I agree with houston, overwater. I had the same problem, cut back the water drastically, and the fruit drops and brownouts were a lot less.

I've seen them growing in Japan. They don't grow on a palm, like dates.

Asian stores like H-mart sell them. I’ve eaten them in stew and soup.
