Sometimes I Just Show My Age,I Guess

This came in my email from a major local hospital . I had surgery at their women’s center a few years ago. This came from their Woman’s Health Center.

Presented with no further comment ”……Each year, about 1 in 10 people with a uterus are affected….”.

The urge to share this overcame the fear of fire..

Oh my. I was just questioning why the Womens Health Center, when addressing their patients, womem, would refer to ”people with a uterus”. Why not ”’women with a uterus.

Ok. Never mind . Seemed odd only to me, I guess. Porkchop, it was an article on endometriosus.

Well, my first reaction was ”one in ten IS”. Then it hit me. Both show my age.

Oddly enough, I just read it as somebody who didn't have a hysterectomy. So what's wrong with the statement?

It was gorgeous out there the last three days and of course I did not do any of the stuff I really need to do. I BADLY need to cut down weed trees & paint with ground kill, spray neighbors kudzu (I help her with it, she can't manage anymore), and weed wack like the dickens. My back yard is a DISGRACE since we have not been able to re-do it yet, and I've left it. Now it's weed seeding everywhere. My friend came to take care of part of it, and he hasn't come back to finish up. I need his big tools to knock down the 8' poke weeds so I can spray inside their hollow stems (I HATE pokeweeds). The old waterway is completely filled with grasses and weeds. I need to get cracking (but we had such fun during the weekend, I just kept having fun....)

Duane, the reason for dressing casually and the current charitable recipient are also on the sign, but in small print. I doubt that many people read it because many people complain loudly that my receptionist is wearing jeans. I'm not sure how her attire affects how she answers their questions at the window. Since many of them are on their way to jail or prison, you wouldn't think they were fashion experts, but I guess I'm wrong about that. Carol, I was an English major in college and my professor was quick to point out that we don't really speak English, we speak an Americanized version, something that evolved from English. As we grow and become more diverse, so does our language. Truthfully, it intrigues me to think of where many of our slang words and phrases came from. Many have Latin roots, others Arabic and some seem to be uniquely ours. Annie

I don't recall if you were interviewing Negron or Sneed when you 'dropped' the name of Reb Foster; I recall you got a surprised reaction of 'how did you know that?'. :) I sure got a kick out of sharing this with the band's former manager. BTW, one of the gifts I got for my last birthday was a radio broadcast of Reb Foster from the 70's. The music is always fun to hear, but what blew my mind was the 'news of the day' segments (Vietnam war, etc.). And of course, I wouldn't have recognized Reb's voice; he's in his 70's now, but still has a very nice voice..just deeper.

Thanks all, for sharing in my excitement. Sometimes I hit all of my favorite haunts and come home with nothing, and other days it seems that there's a treasure in every store. I've even gotten DH on board, and when he has a day off, he'll often suggest that we hit a few of my favorites, as he's an old book junkie, and will peruse the bookshelves for hours while I paw through the junk looking for a treasure. Hahhah Flyleft! That's it! It's a Huffy "Beach Cruiser" (for all of the beaches we have here in Oklahoma....) It's not a super high-end bike, but they're at least $100-175 elsewhere, so I feel like we got a really good deal. The tires are nearly new, brakes are great, etc. My DD is actually out riding it right now. :)

I have noticed that even the NYT is getting a bit sloppy with grammar recently.

Considering that 1 in 10 people with a uterus means 400 million people, I can see why the plural verb was used.

You quoted a partial sentence without any further context other than it was something in an email.

Saying 1 in 10 people with a uterus may be a completely appropriate way to state what is actually being said -- for example, if they are comparing something about women with a uterus vs women without a uterus, you can't say "1 in 10 women" because, after all, not all women have a uterus (hysterectomy, anyone?), and there would be nothing wrong with using the word people here..

I agree Martinca...it should read women with a uterus. I think "are" is correct.

People are is correct! I do a lot of proofreading and I know that that's correct.

Because people is plural. It's one of those tricky things.

I'm going to follow up with what I just said:

This has been going on for a while. It's most noticeable in news articles, and it just breaks my heart. Why is nobody editing what's going online or on the air? Seriously?!

I think they are trying to be inclusive of transgenders who identify as male but still have female organs as well as women who may have had theirs taken out.

(Always reminds me of when we were young children and took the dog in for spaying, mom said she was having her 'puppy maker' taken out!)

That was just woke newspeak. Consider yourself lucky they didn't define women as "people with a bonus hole". You're not showing your age. You're showing common sense.

Well now, that is a horse of a different color. I don't think accepting their verbiage has anything to do with age.

I'd rather love my neighbor. And if that means being woke, I am glad I align with His view of love. It's not up to anyone how you live, but you. That's why He gave us freewill to make our own decisions.
