You could turn on the speakerphone mode, that's hands free. Or get a Bluetooth device.to put on your ear.

PopSockets get good reviews. It won't make it lighter but it should be more comfortable to hold.

Elmer -- Speakerphone is a good option for longer conversations. The phone is just so clumsy! Neither of us thought about that before buying.

Popsockets are good as long as you don't use wireless chargers. Speakerphone is awful for the person you're talking to, and worse for people around you if you're near others.

Where did you buy it and how long ago? Places like Apple will let you exchange it for 14 days assuming no damage or visible wear. I think that’s a better option than any workaround, if you can.

That’s considerate of you, but we’re talking about an expensive purchase that you’ll have to live with for years. I’m sure in a case like this he’d prefer to help you than have you suffer with it. Take it from a son with a useless parental unit. 😉

Does a PopSocket reduce the stress on the fingers? Move it back to the hand? I also see 'band' sort of things that you put three (four?) fingers through.

We don't live with a phone on us at all times -- sits on the kitchen island most of the time. I have an old very simple phone I take to the cancer center, just to summon my chauffeur (DH) when they're done with me.

Popsocket in use. You can also use it to prop the phone up when you set it down.

My Pop socket is so old that the color is completely worn off. It was purple & pink. This pop socket was moved from my old iPhone 6 to my iPhone 13. You know how old that is?!? Pretty solid little do-dad. I just forgo wireless charging and plug it in at night.

I generally agree with this, but to accommodate a sweet 80-something oldster like chisue, using it in a quiet room or somewhere with no background sound, I'm sure no one would be disturbed by it

Do you use a case or a ”skin”? I do, it lets friction do a lot of the work so I don’t have to grip so much.

kf means FOAS has fat fingers.

We wire-charge, so I guess no problem with an attachment. I need to spare my finger joints while holding the phone to my ear. I just tried a rubber band lenghtwise around the phone. That transfers the weight to my wrist. Downside to that type of holder?

What about a stand that sits on the table?

I got a holder, called an "Otter (Box?) that covers much of my phone when I got it about 4 years ago and they claim that it makes it easier to hold it - and offers extra protection if it falls to the floor.

(Memo to Elmer: quite possibly that "kf" was intended to be "of", but the finger quivered/wandered, as my old ones often do).

Her issue is that it's painful to hold it. So she has to change the way she grips the phone.

Return that phone. Most phone companies allow you to return a phone for free within a certain timeframe, some charge a restocking fee. And go with them this time so you can try out the phone to make sure it's a good fit for you.

I put one of Apples rubber covers on my Iphone. Verizon made me get rid of my top of the line flip phone. I really like it. It does not make it that much larger, but is much easier to hold.

Any downside to a loop style handle? The backing sticks on. There's elastic under a one-inch wide silicone band that expands to accept two to four fingers. DS sent me a link to Sinjimoru "Sinji Grip". I see some with leather-look bands -- might be less apt to get stuck in a pocket.

Chisue, I have hand issues and have to pay attention to the sizeof my iphone and devices to hold it. I also need it to be easy to pocket.

I will try to send info onwhat works to help me. I have an iPhone 14 Pro so it is not too big. Fits in my loose pockets and I can bet my hand around it. I get numb fingers if I grasp anything like an iPhone or pens for very long. I sacrificed screen size for pocket-ability and hand ”comfort” (relative).

I have an excellent (best) low profile quasi-grippy magnetic case and a popsocket that work. If I want to use a wireless charger, it is easy to just slide or pry off the popsocket.

I also bought a holder with a hand loop.

If you get a popsocket, I found that (giggle) an opened full roll of toilet tissue makes a good jury-rigged holder to elevate the phone a bit if sitting and working.

The loop would give you an extra finger hold over the popsocket. That maybe what you're looking for.

The Sinji Grip looks good. I may try it, though the elastic one I saw had a comment that said the elastic loosens after a few months and gets floppy so I didn't consider that one.

Chisue, which model phone do you have? Many of us have tried various cases over the years.

I had a pop-out loop from a college visit several years ago, loved it. Even though DS ultimately chose a different school, the phone loop stayed on my phone. I really liked it. It combined a bit of friction with the loop support to make my phone very easy to hold without gripping at all, and the pop-out also make a sturdy easel for the phone.
