Thanks! So when do their tails get the reddish plumage? This one had brown striped tail feathers, I thought that the adults had red tails but I know very little about red tailed hawks so I thought I would ask, thanks! Oh, also, what's that whistling noise that it is making? There is a redtailed hawk couple that lives in my area, I used To see them Together all the time, now they seem to be hanging out solo mostly, I wondered if this one might be one of their "kids" from this year or year before, this one's plumage looks a lot darker than the male and female I usually see in the area.

The bird seems a sharp-shinned to me, based on its stocky shape; rounded head; and the bare smidgen of white on the tip of the tail. Would expect more white on the tip of a Cooper's tail. On the other hand, the length of the bird is 3.2 times the spacing of those bars. If that spacing is 4" or less, it's a sharpie. If 5" or more, Cooper's hawk. In between, rely on other marks.

Thanks Pea but it seems so unlikely that something happened to both parents. Wouldn't at least one of the parents come back to the nest if something happened to the other ? Rat poison is no longer legal in NYC, dry ice is used instead which wouldn't affect a predator.
