Question about Glucosamine / Chondroitin ......Do you take this?
Comments (28)I can only recount my own experience. A few years ago I started to get significant pain in one foot whilst walking, which I treated with visits to the physio and gel packs, but which would come back very frequently. The ankle joint had become very susceptible to getting hurt and swelling. On a couple of occasions, I hurt it very badly and could barely walk for a few days or weeks. According to the specialist, my bones are slightly misaligned and cause stress on my ankle joints, which apparently is wearing away the cartilage and causing pain. In mid- to late October last year I started taking glucosamine and MSM on a daily basis (3 glucosamine, 1 MSM). After a short time I noticed a very significant improvement. I should say that, at around the same time, I also bought some trainers with an air pocket along the whole sole, since that kind of "suspension" helps me avoid sharp impacts on the ankle joints. The trainers are marvellous. They have undoubtedly helped. I also lost a little weight (dropping from 76kg to 70kg), but since I wasn't overweight to begin with I don't think it's very significant. The frequent pains have now practically disappeared. I no longer have to use gel packs and antiinflammatory cream on a daily basis (I hardly use them at all). The ankle joints have become much less susceptible to injury. I have only been to the physio once since October. The reason I think that the glucosamine & MSM have helped is that, even when indoors, when I'm not wearing the trainers, I notice a big difference. I can tolerate my feet and ankles being in positions (for example when seated) that previously would have caused pain. I also tried wearing more normal shoes for a while and found I could tolerate them without too much problem. I even tried some boot-like shoes that had previously caused my a lot of pain, and could walk with them for a week or more without any serious effects. It would be nice if the science were clearer on this, and if we knew why it seems to help some people, and not others, but in my case I'm prepared to say that it's helped, a lot. I think it's good to retain a healthy scepticism about all these things, but in my case I had very little to lose by trying it. For now, the results have been very convincing....See MoreBones, bones where's the bones??
Comments (7)Welcome to the Cooking Forum, imscattered. I know what you mean, I have a couple of stepchildren who are adults but will not eat meat with bones in it. It confuses me. Even KFC now has boneless chicken, customers "demanded" it. People don't want bones, and they want easily portable food that they can eat in the car. I, however, raise grassfed beef, heritage turkeys, chickens for meat, my own pigs. We cure and smoke bacon, render lard, all that good stuff. I cook from scratch, not from a box or a can. I even roast my own coffee and occasionally grind wheat for flour. Many of us here cook fresh vegetables, bake our own bread, and yes, eat meat with bones in it. Comments (18)My (ex) MIL ignored the doctors' advice about supplements for osteoporosis. 15 years ago I remember being on the phone with her and trying to explain why it was so important - I remember I was crying by the end of the conversation. As far as she was concerned, she was fine. She had smoked all her life and only quit when she got a suspect lung x-ray, and that worked out fine. So now she is 88 years old, has lost 8 inches in height, and has trouble breathing because her skeleton is folding over and crushing her lungs. She is alive because genetically she has a strong heart. Years ago I ready an on-line book about osteoporosis written by a pharmacist in Maryland in which he discussed the need for multiple minerals, not just calcium. It was called "Strong Bones Forever." He recommended Jarrows Bone-Up as a supplement. It supplies the correct calcium-magnesium ratio, and it also includes K2, which is said to help the calcium get to the bones and some other minerals. I'm a believer in supplements as needed....See MoreDo any of you take collagen?
Comments (8)A bit of a rant here, just a forewarning. I've been using the Great Lakes collagen from Trader Joe's. I'm on my second (maybe third?) can. The only noticeable difference so far is my hair seems *somewhat* thicker, and I may just be wanting to believe that. Not sure if it's worth it. Like artemis_ma, I make a lot of bone broths in my slow cooker and bone broth is now readily available in stores. With all these "superfoods" I'd rather focus on what I eat than take supplements, although I do take a few supplements that work for me. And what constitutes a "superfood" changes based on influencers that have no real stake in our personal, individual health anyway. The link above, for example, is just affiliate marketing. Not that what these bloggers write can't be good information. But take a look at what a superfood claims to do--I may already be getting those benefits from another source. Reishi? What is that even? The claim that it provides stress relief, immunity and longevity? I'm eating and doing other things in my daily life that are providing those benefits. It's all so overwhelming, which is why I'm not 100% on board with the collagen trend. I also thought this recent article was insightful in how food/supplement trends can be shifted.
