Yes, it's affected companies and operations in all sorts of sectors worldwide, although many are now back up and running.

Airlines, health care systems, banks and scores of other businesses and services around the world began to slowly recover on Friday from severe disruptions caused by a global technology outage. But issues persisted throughout the day with no clear end in sight, as businesses manually updated their systems and airlines struggled to get crews and planes to where they were needed.

The outage was attributed to a software update issued by CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm whose software is used by myriad industries around the world. The disruption, which reached what some experts called “historic” proportions, was a stunning example of the global economy’s fragile dependence on certain software, and the cascading effect it can have when things go wrong.

Yes. People that bank with TD here in Canada didn't have their pay deposited this morning. Retail terminals down, flights cancelled at Pearson airport. Everything is up and running now though, as far as I know. I know the banking and retail is working as of a number of hours ago.

It's a reminder how dependent daily life is on IT reliability. Air travel, 911 centers, DMV operations in several states, and likely much more.

Interesting that from what I've understood from a few different articles, the problem seems to have been a hiccup in the functioning of industrial strength security software from a company called Crowdstrike. Its versions running on Microsoft software, not with other software. Yet, many reports seem to point the finger at Microsoft as well. Maybe so but this happens other times too - when there's a very well-known name and a lesser-known name of anything (people, companies, products) potentially involved in an incident the public's hunger for sensationalism causes focus, whether rightly or wrongly, on the better-known name.

Hopefully more clarity will emerge in the reporting.

My financial advisor called me this morning to reschedule the appointment we were supposed to have today because of this.

My company was caught up in the chaos, but it wasn't every computer that runs Microsoft. (Obviously Apple/Macs are running just fine regardless....) Some of our windows computers had a blue screen error upon start up this morning, others operated normally.

It seemed like a weird combination of particular servers and even particular windows computers on each server. Who knows. Just glad I didn't work in IT today, they were not having a good day....

My workplace was affected with the system used for our payroll. Won't bother me to wait for my check but some were freaking out about it.

Our son works in cybersecurity for one of their biggest competitors. He said it took all he had in him to just sit on his hands and watch. He said he wanted so badly to take lunch to a couple of the departments in hospitals in his city.

It was evidently a glitch in an update, and the co. already issued a fix, I believe. I understand this type of security software is so deeply embedded that it's not a very easy fix. I was talking to my son earlier, and his company, which manages payrolls, garnishments, etc, was affected, but only the computers that were left on overnight, because the update happened around 2 am. Some people couldn't boot up, others could.

He also mentioned that Southwest Airlines wasn't affected because their company runs on ancient software - like Windows 95 or something (?). That's been considered a drawback for them prior to this - now it's definitely not.

I guess our city does not use Crowdstrike's services, because I didn't notice anyone in our office having problems today. I have a Mac computer at work and use the wifi, so there wasn't any issue for me either.

I think Southwest runs on a single Commodore 64 in someone's basement. 😆

May I assume you're another person who, like me, dislikes Southwest.

My brother and his young family are stuck in Atlanta airport, awaiting a rescheduled flight to a different airport than their departure airport. He should have been home by 11:30am today. He may get to a couple of states (ORD) away by later tonight and then have to take a 4 hour train ride home as there are no rental cars available tomorrow. I don’t envy him!

We had gone to the Speedway truckstop gas station and the pump said "credit system down" so my husband went to go inside to see what was the problem and there was a CLOSED sign on the door! Apparently their system was taken down from this. Luckily the station across the street was OK. We were about out of gas! UGH!

When I was a technical writer, part of my process was to run the applications so I could document exactly what the user or support person should see and do. Soooo many times I had to back to the various developers and remind them of all the platforms the products needed to run on. In fact, yesterday DH and I referenced one of the more notorious developers who never tested his apps: we figured he’d gone to work for CrowdStrike.

Elmer, Southwest had their niche, originally. Now they don't seem to know what they want to be. IMO of course. They are not my carrier of choice so it's irrelevant to me. 😆🤷‍♀️

My past experience with Southwest was great - however that was pre-pandemic...

I voted Southwest off of my island more than 30 years ago. as I best recall. It's the only one I feel that way about. I avoid it and won't take a SW flight unless there's absolutely, positively no reasonable alternative.

A stock's price represents the emotionally perceived value and benefit of being a part owner of the company. Such feelings can be affected indirectly by the company's operations and events but neither influences the other in a hard-wired way.
