List of annuals that rabbits wont eat, and what they do eat
Comments (63)Hello snaylor, " The rabbits come up on the railing of my deck to eat from the rail planters and the other plants (on plant stands!) on my deck. Stargazer lilies chewed to the ground before they are an inch high. Nothing "cute" about bunnies, they are destructive, filthy animals. " Since you have a neighbor, I assume you live in town and an air rifle is not a good idea for controlling the rabbits. A slingshot would probably be legal, but would take some practice. Assuming your deck is in your backyard, fencing the rabbits out of your backyard is probably the best idea. A chicken-wire fence about 3 or 4 feet high might work, provided that your codes permit that. If you have an existing fence, the chicken-wire would just serve to make it rabbit proof. Nothing will keep squirrels out, but as you already know, they can be trapped. Fortunately for me, rabbits don't damage my zinnias. We have several native plants in our rural area that they prefer. Comments (33)I give up on fencing since the baby bunnies crawl under the fence. A lazy way to deter rabbits is to put Irish Spring soap (has a minty element which deer hates). Back in 2012 I got 12 bands (tiny own-roots) from Burlington Roses, I left them outside for several days but I placed a bar of soap in front of them. None were eaten. One night I heard a loud coughing & hacking noise, it was a raccoon that ate the soap and vomited that in a long trail of soapy bits across my garden. It was a mess to clean that up from the grass. Husband recycled the paper box that contained Irish Spring Soap and that stank up my entire kitchen. So I brought that stinky paper outside and placed on my raised bed .. haven't seen rabbits jumping on that bed for over a week, and the paper still reeked of soap. I found segments of branches & smeared that with soap and placed the branches as a "SOAPY SCENT BORDER" around rose bush. So far I haven't seen any rabbits around those "soap-scented" sticks-border, and the rain doesn't wash the scent away from sticks like smearing on bricks. Woody sticks and paper retain the soapy scent longest. Strong odor works for deer-control. Deer used to eat the leaves on my tall roses. So I hung Bounce-dryer sheets on the branches to deter deer. Perfumed dryer sheets ARE NOT as strong as Irish spring soap (which I smell it 30 feet away). Irish spring soap works best with its minty scent....See MoreHow can I deter deer from eating my Bloodgood?
Comments (14)I use it for 2 years and it works! "I have used a similar solution for years. (We have 30-40 deer every night feeding on the field next to us and some adventuresome deer always manage to sneak in under the dog's nose.) Fill a 4 litre milk jug almost to the top with water. Take one egg. Whisk or beat the egg really well, DO NOT STRAIN. Pour into milk jug and close lid. Shake back and forth to mix. Now, pour some into a small squirt bottle and as you are walking around your acreage or yard mist the plants you do not want the deer to eat. You do not have to POUR the solution on your plants, a little mist goes a long way. Rain will wash it off. I reapply after EVERY rain or dew and otherwise about once a week, if no rain. I have NEVER noticed a smell of rotten eggs on my plants in hot weather. The mixture will smell if left unused for a few days and you will smell the solution as you are misting with old solution, but it goes away as it dries..... my garden does not smell in hot weather. The protein smell deters the deer. You can spray your plants with fresh or days-old mixture, both work. My spray bottle has been used for about 4 years and has NEVER "gummed up". Better solution... permanent solution...an eight foot fence or deer hunting season."...See MoreTalk to me about Irish Spring
Comments (5)I don't know if it works since I used it in netting bags on my in-laws' hollies, but in conjunction with high-test fishing line zigzagged between posts. The two together were completely successful in keeping the hollies untouched, and there seems to be less deer munching since I left the bags there at season's end, though I removed the posts and fishing line. I used Irish Spring since that is what my MIL had already gotten though I was skeptical about it working. It hasn't harmed the hollies or the nearby grass at all. Our soil is acid....See More- last year
