Growing Crape Myrtle outdoor in Southern NH
Comments (43)I went to college in New Orleans. It was a horribly long, depressing, and expensive experience. There were many times when I was at the end of my rope. Honestly, I don't think I would still be alive, if the sight and fragrance of Crape Myrtles hadn't occasionally reassured me. So yeah, I can see why you want one. I have my desk positioned so that I can look out at my own beautiful CM. It's at least forty years old, and twenty feet tall, with a beautiful, unmolested, mature shape: very much a tree from the Jungles of India. The blooms are a rich orchid/violet color, and are at their peak right now. And yes, the tree continually tells me that everything will be all right. To grow one in New Hampshire, you will need: .A hardy variety .A sun trap (preferably a SE exposure beside your house) .Seriously deep mulch in winter Or: a miniature variety in a pot...See MoreGW location
Comments (150)Bonjour, Moebus! I was in Evian last summer, for about 5 minutes LOL! We had some time between trains in Lausanne, so we ferried over to Evian, hopped off to touch ground and grass, and ferried back. It was lovely, hope to stay longer next time :) I may have a story about Elora, too. During the war, my grandparents' china pattern wasn't being shipped to the States, but it was available in Elora. I think it was Elora, will check with Dad....See MoreDarcey B vs. MW, do I need both?
Comments (50)I grow both DB and MW, love them both. They are quite different in character for me; DB is a larger, more airy and graceful kind of plant, MW is stockier, smaller and much more thorny, though still nicely shaped. Both repeat well, and the colors are beautiful. Though both have those gorgeous purple-y tones that I love, MW tends to be darker. I think you really need them both. Would be great to see some pictures of Heathcliff. When it first came out I was tempted, because I love the name, but then I saw a specimen at NYBG and was unimpressed - the flowers were beautiful but the plant itself was kind of awkward looking, at least to me. Or maybe it was just that particular plant?...See MoreJUNE OBF: All about YOU!
Comments (195)thank you Renae for a good month. I enjoy sharing my garden. It also gives me time to slow down and look closely at the garden. I am often focused on the to tall plant, or not enough color in an area. And the plants every one else has thrivng in their yards. I went to my community garden and focused on the plants not making it. when I stood back and had a "moment" on how tall the tomato plants are. Have picked 2 for the 4th and the lettuce is 2 foot tall. If I only had dozen plants I am sure they would get the admiration they deserve. but I plant more because I can....See More- 2 years ago
