An unusual Asiatic lily I just purchased

I found this yesterday. Altho it's blooming period is at an end, there was still one bloom good enough to snap a photo of. There's always next year (a gardener's mantra). There was no tag and the nursery woman wasn't sure of its name, so I did a Google search by description and found it. It's called "Apricot Fudge". Funny name.

The blooms are a rose shape.

I've never seen a lily bloom like that one. It's really unusual!

Mindy, I've often overwintered potted lilies, but in my unheated garage. I grew lilies in crates this year for cutting, and I am going to try to overwinter them also, still in the crates. I don't know about that 60 degree temp, though. I would think that would bring the lilies out of dormancy. Sorry, can't help with the caladiums. I've never grown those - although I do know I can't overwinter potted dahlias in the garage. I don't know how similar (or not!) a caladium would be to a dahlia! :) Dee

Lilies only bloom once per season. It is normal for the stems to brown and die. While the stems and leaves were green they were feeding the bulbs for next year. If you get a long enough period of cold weather in the winter your bulbs should bloom again next year just fine on their own schedule. These were probably forced for spring bloom. Lilies need a period of vernalization (cold treatment) to bloom the following year. I THINK it's about 6 weeks below 40 degrees, though I'm by no means positive. You may want to contact your local county extension office to find out if you have enough of a cold period for successfully growing lilies. Your extension agent or the local Master Gardeners should be able to help you.

I would pot them up. That way their roots get a chance to get going. Don't use the Miracle Grow moisture retention stuff, it will keep the bulbs too wet and they might rot. Just moisten whatever soil you use (should be fast draining). Best to error on the drier side for lilies. I cover my containers with a piece of plywood for the winter, just to keep the rain out. Eight inches deep and maybe a bit of bulb food mixed in the soil sounds good, and a couple of inches of organic mulch on top if you have it. You can move them out to their places in the garden in the spring, keeping as much soil with the rootball as possible. Or you can choose to grow them out in their containers and transplant in the fall. Linda, if your bulblets are withered and desiccated it doesn't bode well for them. They can be potted up as described but not so deep.

Totally CRAZY! I've never heard of it or seen it. no.....don't like it...or rose shaped tulips.

The color is nice, looks pretty with the cooler colors in the border. I thought about going back and buying another one, they were basically one tall stalk with a cluster of blooms at the top (spent); but I'm noticing how mine seems to have multiple stalks already. Perhaps they spread easily, will have to wait and see in a couple of years.

I'm with nicole. Don't like the form at all. And the "ice cream" tulip is an abomination, IMHO! I prefer my flowers to bloom in the original form (don't get me started on daylilies that have "chicken fat" edges or "toothed" ones). Just UGH. >(

Re day lilies. A neighbor raises day lilies for sale, and one year he featured a variety a fellow day liliy "farmer" had created (not the right word, but bred doesn't seem right either). Anyway, it was a light lavender color with white ruffled edges and he called it "Lavender Panties". LOL Of course I bought one, it was pretty and the name so cute. However it only returned three seasons, lasting as long as some panties. : )

It wouldn't last even that long here - the lily that is, I'm not sure if I have panties that age as mine are all the same style Wacoal so none really stand out.

Deer love lily shoots and I don't need one more thing that needs dedicated protecting. I do like unusual (am also attracted to anything NOT pink) and might have tried one of your Apricot Fudge in another gardening life. That translates to 'another garden'....with this property just a few blocks away from my former, the deer are just relentless. One of my favorite ways to spend a day not all that long ago was searching out rare plant nurseries.

I was in a long time favorite E side Seattle nursery for the first time this year just yesterday. In a tee shirt, not cold and not in rain, completely enjoying myself and I did buy a couple of things. When I got home I found the deer had eaten the geraniums in front of this office window. They left the big planter at the front door alone, grateful as its a major point of color in my front yard but that one I'd sprayed with deer repellent just a week or two ago and the smaller plants outside this window had been skipped when I sprayed. My fault.

I'm afraid I'm on the anti side. This thing looks diseased to me. I like a lily to look like a lily. The beauty is in the simplicity of the lines as well as the colours.
