Using pine shavings as a growing media
Comments (33)No soil, that is small parts of the barks. If I add any fine partical it will flow to the bottum and cause a perched water table. That size bark is good to use by itself. I use this as a soilless medium in 2 gal containers with a hydroponic fertilizer program. I would never add any fine partical to this ever. Homehydro, Thanks for the tip on the perlite, lucky me I have some now. Don't you use hydrogen peroxide? I do at all times, every water and fertilize I put H2o2 in the water before my nutes. When using H2o2 if you smell the roots, they will smell life fresh radishes. Compaired to the brown roots in a none treated system. Please look up how to use it all time in your system because once you see you will never stop using it. I am all drain to waste, no pumps so fine particals that come of the bark will not matter. I have only tapla to thank over in the container forum for inspiring me. Now I am waiting for the same place I got it to get more of the mulch in....See MoreBuilt in media center...anyone have?
Comments (8)Wow~ !! I love that second option, which really sinks the TV behind the sliding doors. If the bedroom is the room you wish for your TV, that is fantastic. It works with drawers and shelves, but would not work with hanging garments. I also like the top one, but that is not so unique. I've seen similar setups on HGTV, where they have access to all the electronic equipment from behind. If you are really into electronics and movies and have lots of STUFF to go with the TV, that will be a convenient plan. In our case, we have a 42 inch flat panel presently mounted above our fireplace. I'm planning to put in book shelving all along that wall, and maybe bring forward the fireplace surround a few inches to make it appear part of the whole thing. I will get a modern gas fire box with glass front and the crystal clear stuff (whatever it is called) instead of lava rocks and get rid of the smelly old style gas logs. I hate the smell of gas in the house. BUT, The entire wall being shelving, the TV above with maybe shutters to bifold and cover that black hole when it is off, it sounds very cottagey to me. Do not worry about making it FLAT, because a cottage look allows for surfaces to be broken and lots of molding will add to the character. Be sure to keep trim all the same color for a "birthday cake icing" look, unless you want it to be very modern like the second picture. How about showing the room that you already completed? Then we'd have a better idea of your style. Very interesting project, and so pleased to make your acquaintance. :)...See Moreideas for low media cabinet?
Comments (14)This really calls for some time on Craigslist to see what type of stuff you have locally--you may be able to save a lovely piece from being painted aqua. Even if you have to poke holes in the back for ventilation and cords. A lot of older buffets/sideboards (1940sish) have that simple Duncan Phyfe style that blends in with traditional settings and no legs. I don't suppose you can fit an art deco popup bar into your decor can you?...See MoreShould my media console match the width of my TV?
Comments (17)I think you are being a bit too literal with the "recommended/suggested" TV hanging heights. The bottom of my 65" TV is at 33" and I would not want it any lower ... my DH would want it quite a bit higher because he leans way back when relaxing on a sofa and is technically looking at the top half of a wall. We just got a 100" TV for a media room and he would have hung it way too high based on the way he sits, but luckily I convinced him to lower it to what I consider a "normal" height! The bottom of the 100" TV is 39.5" off the floor and the sofa is 16' 6" from the wall. The primary use of this room is 2-channel audio which dictated the position of the reclining sofa. There is no way the TV should be at 18" off the floor, unless you plan on sitting on the floor when watching. Then again, your room might be much smaller and you sofa has to be much closer, but I would hate to have to be any closer to a TV of that size. In a movie theater I never sit any closer than middle of the theater as I want to be able to see the whole screen without having to move my eyes or my head . You might be one of those people that likes to sit in the front row!...See MoreIsla Cherry
