Design dilemma: Living room with windows and doors on all sides

Hi! How should I layout a TV and sofa here? Trying to furnish and decorate this 14x17 living room but but struggling as every wall has an opening (door, window, or interior arch opening).

The arch facing the kitchen I don’t mind. It’s the arch facing what was once a garage now converted extra room that’s weird.

I mocked a bookcase converting that arch but that bookcase is $5000 (room and board) and don’t want to spend that kind of money on that.

This is a rental and I can’t modify the wall. Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.

Billy bookcases from Ikea could cover that arch. However, you should plan to have furniture not necessarily hugging the walls. For us to help, please supply a detailed floor plan with measurements of all windows, doors, arches, etc. If you have furniture that you hope to use, please supply a photo and measurements of it.

That’s very clever with the bookcase .

This could also be another idea. I would prefer this, because I am not a fan of floating sofas, plus, I wouldn’t want my sofa in front of the front door. My mockup is not as neat and professional as yours, but hopefully gives the general idea. If possible, I would put a tv on the wall that’s adjacent to closet, wall mounted with a (slim) floating shelf console. Some type of art over arch. Side chair facing windows and door.

@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout.

Pic #2,,,that wall needs a shallow console and some art. any of these would work. mix and match or tweak them to go w/what you like. even bringing in some warm wood would give the space some depth. As for artwork, get what you like. blues/whites/golds/ teals/ yellows/pinks,,,,are just a few that would work well. The artwork w/the console could also work for over the couch area You could also do this parsons table in an acrylic or a white,,, consider doing some finish wood trim work around both windows. doesn't have to be fancy,,just do some simple straight trim moldingor like this one, below, without the sill,,,and do it in white. can you replace those blinds on the front window and do something like the cellulars or Pirouette shades? this color would be perfect or do the white shade w/some blue panels

Hi. I've reproduced your room in a 3D build to help you visualize in a better way. To maintain a foot flow I have centered the sofa facing each other. You can add one or more swivel chairs which you can tuck away or corner them when not in use. Mounted tv on a wooden panel opposite the fireplace. This way it serves as a family room as well as an entertainment room. Perfect for a winter evening when it's too chilly to leave the fireplace but also wouldn't miss your favorite show. If you can get rid of the piano, you can place two chairs and a bookshelf and create a little reading space. Let me know if you would want me to work on more layouts. Always happy to help!

There are reasons why most people center the couch, but most people also prefer sitting on a good one. :) I guess I'd try putting the couch where the armchair is now (but extending into the corner), the two recliners where the couch is, and the armchair where the chair/lamp combo is on the right of the photo. I think that the seating would still work for conversation, but you would have the recliners facing the TV (and, honestly, the couch facing the view!). The main drawback would be having to walk around the end of the couch, but I don't think it would be a big deal once you got used to it -- be sure to put some light in the corner though. You could also put a short console behind the couch so it's not such a cold back to the dining room, if so desired.

A row of IKEA Billy bookcases along that wall, attached to the wall with drywall anchors. Cut your tv opening. Sell on FB when you move.

It looks like you can easily just place a TV, mounted on the wall on an articulating arm. You might consider doing the wall that's in the second image to the right of the closet. That looks like it would work, though of course you'll have people walking in front of the TV if using the main door.

First thing we might suggest is to fill in the arched opening with drywall. Then you can easily place the TV on one of the walls where the openings were. Here is some inspiration for you.
