Uh oh, I think the kitchen remodel starts very soon
Comments (13)I can't afford to mess this up, and I'd like your input. This is the drawing I did a long time ago for the outside wall. I'm firm on what I want there except for the area outlined in red. There is 2-1/2 feet there between the refrigerator cabinet and the door. Since this is the door we use almost exclusively, I'd really like a cabinet beside the fridge to hang coats etc. But since the door opens against that wall, would the door always be in the way? The door wasn't there when the house was built. We put it there because the builder didn't put a door into the backyard. But now, the door bangs against the bar and it's impossible to sit there if people are going in & out, so I'm a little worried that people will slam the door into the cabinet. Of course, I can always put a door bumper on the cabinet. Dh thinks we should leave the wall free for the door to open all the way, but since all the other doors in our house open against another door or a wall, I don't really see a problem with a cabinet. Any experience with a door against a cabinet? Pros and cons?...See MoreAll White but soon to be Oak New Kitchen
Comments (10)Thanks all! Heavens, I can't imagine moving 12 horses; two was hard enough! Labbie, the backsplash tile is from a Japanese Company called Wa-Kei tile and I'll put the link at the bottom of the page. The tile I'm using in the kitchen is "Twilight" listed under Mosaic tiles. I fell in love with every tile sample from Wa-Kei that the showroom had. Gorgeous colors and textures.... I'd recommend seeking out a showroom as they have to be seen in person to see the subtleties. Here's another photo of the tile. I'll be using another of their tiles (Gashu) in the Mud Room. Kate, the interior dimensions of the two larger sinks are 21x18. My largest sheet pan is smaller than that so it's not an issue for me. For the few times a year that I might soak a grill or oven rack, I've got my utility sink if needed. I love the functionallity of the triple section being available for handwashing, rinsing plates etc and won't have a prep sink so it suits my cooking style to do the unfashionable triple! Archie, I'm still struggling with the soapstone source, I've fallen in love with Julia from M Tex in NJ but may have to install/go get ourselves if I can't talk Florida Joshua into coming on a northward trip. For Marmoleum we're using a place in Salem VA called Whitt Carpet One. There are two places in Charlottesville but we struck out with them.... I can tell you more if you email. If you're looking for tile, I highly recommend Sarisand Tile in C'ville. Here is a link that might be useful: Wa-Kei Tile...See MorePainting a red kitchen white!
Comments (25)Kilz, the original oil based product, is really the only good primer that they make. Kilz2 or Kilz the latex version (or whatever variation of the name they may be calling it these days) is junk and should be avoided. Kilz (the original) should be used for stain killing only. Painting over varnish overspray is not really a stain. Anything will cover that, even flat paint....See MoreDo you think modern kitchens will look dated soon?
Comments (53)I think as long as the triangle is achieved between sink, stove and refrigerator with some room (as much as can fit!) for all that goes with cooking up a storm, and not installing any 'trends' that overwhelm (columns), a kitchen can remain in style. When my parents moved into their house in the 50's they enlarged the kitchen, and then proceeded to paint the cabinetry (original to the 1930's house) green. One wall was wallpapered. That kitchen stayed on trend right through to shortly before their deaths. The green changed with the times - avocado, sage, apple. The wallpaper did also; small or large patterned. When the trend came for less intricate cabinet doors and wood tones the cabinet doors were replaced with more streamlined varnished birch - which played well off the now deep-avocado cabinets. The last change came when molding was back in style - we wished then they had saved the original doors, but the solid wood plain doors were easily changed up with some molding applied, then painted - white of course (lowers stayed green :-) )! And the floor vinyl went to linoleum and finally wood. After the first change none of these were intensive remodels over the course of 50 years. My kitchen is painted with black cabinets. Upper cabinets are mostly glass-doored. One wall (thanks mom) is wallpapered with a large print containing a beautiful blue, which is repeated on the oven door and in the visible pantry. To achieve this was a major overhaul from the tiny kitchen before it. But I am confident that what we have done will last with a few coats of paint over the years. We didn't do anything that couldn't adjust with the times. The only mistake we made (as far we know so far lol) was to go with marble for all the countertops. We love it, but the fact is that quartz really is a great material!...See MoreRelated Professionals
