repurpose panels

25 years ago when we moved into our home, I bought these panels which I hung on the wall going up the stairs. Of course, my taste has changed over the years, and I am not sure if I want to keep them any longer or to repurpose them somehow. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sell them on ebay, or post them on Facebook Buy Nothing. I don't know how ebay works, but if you need more info on the other, let me know. Not my taste either, but you never know who might like them.

Here are a couple of photos of some panelling I did in our attic. In this room the beadboard was horrendously uneven and badly done; I spent a lot of years looking at it and despairing about what could be done with paint, or removing and replacing or what have you. Finally I decided it could only be covered and looked to do it with as little loss of space (ie headroom) as possible. Some of the original material shows in the photos as these are work-in-progress. The first two photos are of the shoulder walls which are about 4 feet high, the second two are of the beginnings of work on the ceiling. I've mixed nice quality maple and walnut plywood with poplar and walnut trim, all 1/8th thick, held on with brass screws. On the ceiling, I first attach the panels using flat-head screws, and then add the strips, which are stop-n-screen type pieces from the moulding store, with round head screws, covering the flat head screws. I think the poplar strips are 3/8 thick. The only caution I'd offer is that the material is obviously not rated with any kind of fire protection, so I am obsessive about having a working smoke detector up there and good egress. If your work is being inspected, or if the area is more complicated than our little attic, sprinklers might have a certain appeal. The end wall is flat T&G boards, so it is just getting filled and wallpapered. This sequence may be helpful to someone taking out a wall. Addition is 12 x 26. We knocked out 26 feet of bearing wall at front of house. Girder trusses now bear the load. We had a construction company design consultant help us do the plan. Worth the money. DH and his squad of helpers worked from the outside in, but at a difficult day about a year ago, the wall had to come down. Wish I could show you the early work, but Flickr account has put the early photos into storage. The story picks up 5 months into the DIY project... Here is destruction day photo (red painted area is new area) Here is #2 after demo of the wall (note ceiling and floor) It was at this point that we moved the cooking into a camper trailer for 5 months. Here you can see new ceiling (upper right) meeting the old ceiling segments in former kitchen, stairwell, and front stoop. (Don't try to understand geography, just absorb the general concept that ceiling segs are merging.) Here we have removed former ceiling fixtures in original kitchen ceiling and installed wiring for a new light in our new kitchen hall. I've skipped the photos dealing with messing with insulation. This is where we were finishing new ceiling over new lobby. Rented jack scaffold for wallboard. Seam between old and new ceilings is red. Here is the beginning of trying to reconcile ceilings. DH used lots and lots of mud on this seam. This is the ceiling scar which persisted for many many days. Once we began painting, this area developed bubbles. (It's finally done bubbling, we hope.) The diagonal floor was made in 1954. The rest is new, including redone old front hall which now incorporates part of previous garage. Here is the eventual floor--can you find the merged section? You sorta can if you physically walk to the door opening at upper left because the floor had dipped 1.5 inches about a foot from the threshold, but we're generally proud of how things went. By the Install Day for countertops, the ceiling seems to look pretty good. I wish I had more appropriate photos that show the merged ceiling and floor, but I don't.

I think 99% of furniture can be repurposed with paint, given a whole new look. Of course, not much you can do about those rounded edges without dealing with some major carpentry. Myself, I'd paint them a creamy white and then rough the edges up with some sandpaper, same with the lamp....but I don't know your style or decor. Even really bright fun colors work in some homes! There is a very helpful blog called "Better After" which shows dozens of photos of before and afters of salvaged furniture, from antiques to what you have. It is a great blog for ideas if you don't mind paging thru all the posts to check out the pictures. It is mostly photos, not alot of writing, which is good. Good luck.

Repurposing mirrored sliding doors - any ideas?

Sunset magazine showed a home where they were used in the garden and it was fantastic. Made a small garden space look large and interesting. They were mounted to posts behind. Ivy or some bushy hedge plant covered the edges. Even with a little dirt at the lower edge from being outside, they made a huge impact. It made the cover if I remember right. I also saw some being reused in a garage. Mirrors make a small space feel more open. They bounce light in in a dark space. We had a large mirror at the end of a long entry. It used to bring in the outdoor greenery opposite our glass entry door and made all the difference. Why not try them in a place where you need more light. They reflect any light source. Any place but the ceiling. I find that creepy.

Oh!! Horrors ! Please do not store in attic or basement. If you've had them for 25 years.......they owe you nothing: )

Out of sight is out of mind, and it's either trash..or treasure. If you waffle...can't decide? It's someone ELSE's treasure!!

Haha, Jan, I get it. But if you're not totally sure, then the attic or basement is a kind of halfway house for those kinds of items. Just make sure that you clear out those spots on a regular basis so the stuff doesn't pile up.

If you can find a "made in china" label, then just donate to a local thrift store that raises money for local charities.

Yeah..........................?

lol!!! That's the problem! The basement and attic are never a "halfway" and I have 33 years of moving people here to there to prove it. Unless it's to the "home of absolute last resort?"

It goes into the NEXT attic or basement..........: ) I am a witness. Or the kids laugh through the tears as it goes into a dumpster.

I agree with Diana, to a degree. I think it’s okay to save things for a while. However, set a time limit. Put a reminder in your phone for not more than a few months. In my case, I end up donating about 90% of that stuff.

I'm sure that's the case for most people. I am not most people. I am very organized and disciplined, so that works for me. I like the time limit idea, Connecticut.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. When I’m sitting in my living room, I can see this wall leading upstairs. I’ve thought about a gallery wall, but I have one on the 2nd floor. I contemplated a grouping of mirrors but worry I’ll accidentally knock one down…since I am such a clutz (spelling?). Any ideas?

Art...............: ) THREE prints related ? The sooner you donate those? The faster you will find something you love, and no there is no rush.

I'm saying in as nice a way as possible, you can love something else. More.

Do not put in the basement, unless you tell me you clean it out every. single. Spring.

Before you answer? Ask yourself what else is down in the catacombs.....

I think it depends on if you have a repurpose idea already or if this is something you commonly do. I would save them but I always have a project. If you complete repurpose projects at the rate of twice a decade then I suggest you donate them.
