12' Wide Sliding Glass Doors

Looking for a recommendation for sliding/gliding glass doors:

Located in Northeast (Phila, PA)
Narrow frame for modern look
Energy Efficient
3 panels with one operating panel, 2 stationary
Insect screen
Door is north facing

I've looked at Andersen and Pella, but prefer a modern look with maximum glass. My online search is not yielding much how to discern quality and energy efficiency.

Currently researching Western, Awake, Fleetwood.

Western and Fleetwood are good choices to start with. But first things first things first, since you say modern and narrow sight lines, I am assuming that you lead you to all aluminum? Pella and Andersen are primarily wood with alum cladding. I would not look at Weathershield as they will be a wood clad product similar to the look of Andersen and Pella, and only slight better quality than anything Pella (which is at the very bottom of any list I would make.

60" shower doors are actually made for 60" tubs and prefabricated shower pans which are 60" stud to stud, and after cement board and tile installation end up at a bit over 58" usually. If yours will be 60" finished surface to finished surface instead of the above, you should look for one that is wider than 60", they do exist.

To all reading this post: First of all, the quoted post should be attributed to Brickeyee. My sincerest apologies for my error. Here's a copy-and-paste version with the relevant section. Posted by brickeyee (My Page) on Thu, Jan 31, 08 at 19:46 .... The track should also NEVER be attached to a header in a weight bearing wall. A secondary header should be installed with about a 1/2 inch clearance below the structural header. If the header bows (and they all do to some extent) it can cause problems with the track. If the wall is NOT weight bearing the header will not be loaded and you CAN omit the second header. Decker, You asked what I meant by a secondary header. The real answer is I don't know; I'm just parrotting what I've read. But the term was used when describing 2x4(?)as something to which the pocket door track would be attached. BTW, this door installation is not a DIY project. I'm just trying to second-guess potential problems in construction. Again, I apologize if I've opened a can of worms.

These openers are limited by the design of the open and close limit assembly. Even adding an additional extension would not help you. Genie uses a simpler limit control which may be the answer to your problem. Unfortunately it involves replacing the opener.

This thing with the dog started out as a mailing to the distributors to hint at the introduction of a new window and I have posted below the post cards first page and what you saw when you flipped over the outer frame that hid the dog. Pretty funny and guess someone in marketing loved it so much that it make the brochure as when you look out your window with more viewing area you may not like everything you see. I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t think it works as well in the brochure as it did in the post card. Click on the pictures and they will enlarge. Simonton basically redesigned a new lower end window to replace the 5050 and the 5300 they narrowed the main frame to increase the glass area and it adds about 7/8" each way. The sash is the same as the old 5050 and 5300 but new main frame is nicer looking. You can order it with Super Spacer or Supercept in double pane only with a U factor of .29. Marvin makes a nice door. I have a wider stile version but I think their "Modern" style has narrow stiles.

@millworkman perhaps the real task is for me to better understand the pros and cons of aluminum vs wood with alum cladding. Any tips for how to choose what is best for my project? My doors will be opening to an enclosed city yard and not a view of the serene ocean or majestic mountains. Hoping to combine the modern aesthetic with a quality & durable product that keeps the heat in, and intruders out.

Modern aesthetics are typically narrow sight lines which would lead you more to an all aluminum product. A quality product will be durable. Any sliding door honestly will only do so much to keep intruders out. A quality product with the proper Low E coating for your region with do a good job on the heat being kept in or out season dependent.
