Japanese maple under red maple?
Comments (8)I don't think you have to move right to questioning his competence. I would check first what assumptions each of you is operating under. If you have given him instructions to produce a certain kind of environment in the yard, shade may be an essential part of that and perhaps he can't produce any other source of shade in the short term and is concerned you'll not be happy with the outcome if there isn't enough shade. Or something. He may also be making some assumptions about how much you want to water your plants. I de-shaded the north side of my house with the removal of a tree and it does get sunny as the sun veers around in the afternoon. New trees are just growing in enough to make an impact 4 years later. If there is a chance you will be removing the big tree at some point within 5 years, the pot is a very good idea for another reason - you'll have to get the little maple out of the way of falling tree parts. They do grow well in pots, especially if the pots are big enough. KarinL...See MoreIdeas of perennials or other plants to put under this Japanese maple?
Comments (3)You want to be very careful removing the existing plants and planting fresh!! Japanese maples are extremely sensitive to any root disturbance and it would be a shame to damage (or potentially fatally injure) that beautiful specimen. Any low growing, shallowly rooted, spreading perennial would work.....epimediums, hardy geraniums, stonecrops, Veronica 'Georgia Blue'. I really like the gray-blue tones with red leaved maples, so blue fescue (Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue') would provide an excellent color contrast....See MorePlanting under a japanese maple tree?
Comments (6)The potential for damage certainly exists but really only when planting. Once in the ground, the roots of the geranium will co-mingle quite peaceably with the JM. So try to minimize the disruption as much as you can. Pre-plan the placement to avoid any major roots, plant small if you can (4" or quart much better than a gallon) and as small a quantity as you feel you can get away with. Don't opt for full coverage immediately - the geranium does spread and quite handily :-) And doing this planting in winter while the tree is still dormant will present the least disruption to the roots....See MoreLooking for a Japanese maple that would be ok to plant near a fence
Comments (8)is it possible to give us a pic of the yard .. instead of just the drawing??? what is your plan for the grass.. kids.. bocci ... that is probably where you should be planting the tree ... the base problem is that you are wanting to plant a 20 to 40 foot tree in a 3.5 foot bed at the fence ... why ...??? and do understand.. tree basically never stop growing .. at some magical height ... they have an established annual growth rate.. and they will grow at that rate until you die ... or it dies ... so.. plan ahead ... get out of the box you are stuck in.. and make a new tree plan ... there are certain tree planting times.. if you cant get it planted in the next couple weeks.. plan on planting in fall .. see section one at the link below ... and then study the rest ... in the meantime.. you can plant the rest of the garden ... its not really imperative to do it all this spring ... no matter what significant other says.. lol .. ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub...See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
