Seeking Shrub for sunny side, narrow space
Comments (3)Not sure what your zone is, but if Nandina domestica, broadleaf evergreen with great red berries all winter - "heavenly bamboo" (not a real bamboo) can grow there, several feet tall and 2-1/2' wide. Zone 5B or 6A or down south further... Hortster Here is a link that might be useful: Nandina...See MoreShrub choice for a sunny side of house
Comments (5)You didn't mention what zone you are in. Sounds like your site is hot and sunny, and you want a low maintenance shrub? Carol Mackie might be too high maintenance and it appears to not like too hot and dry a spot? Ames St. John's wort Hypericum kalmianum 'Ames' is a hardy yellow flowered shrub if you can find one. A knock out rose is also hardy, disease free and floriferous. Wegeilas sp? come in many various sizes, lots of flowers and leaf colors to choose from vareigated to red to green and are easy to grow as well as hardy in full sun. Also, nearly any of the spireas would probably be easy to grow there.. check these for height and color of leaf and flower to suit your place. Evergreens offer various junipers.. low growing from the rug types or gold tipped varieties to the blue star.. then arborvitae come in various sizes.. Danica and hetz? midget are around two to three feet round.. others are available.. check out your local nursery.. there are lots of things available. Just make sure they're tolerant of dryish soil and low maintenance plants.. of course you'll have to water deeply and well once or twice a week during drought especially the first summer...It helps to make a sort of a narrow trench about a foot away from the plant so the water will soak down into the root area rather than down the slope when you do water. I know what you mean about hydrangeas in a hot dry spot.. the "hydra" means "water" I would guess.. Hope this helps.....See MoreWhat to plant up the sides of a shade structure?
Comments (4)Too bad about the solar panels, you have the perfect set-up for wisteria, kiwi, and grapes, but they will quickly cover the panels. I'm thinking the sunny side would be perfect for one of my favorite roses- Graham Stuart Thomas. This is not technically a climber, but in California reaches about 8 feet if happy. It has been disease free and continuous blooming all summer long for me in the central valley. Some of the smaller climbers would work as well, two of my favorites are Altissimo, and Don Juan, both dark red. A small vine that tolerates some shade is Sollya heterophylla, an evergreen with true-blue bell shape flowers all summer. And there's always star jasmine... Comments (9)My favorite of the bunch is Patsy Carpenter. For some reason I think yellows are the most under-rated color, maybe because there are so many....but I alway find them captivating. They just make me feel happy all over. Celeste...See MoreHU-864750314
