carrara marble counter tops installed today!
Comments (28)Thanks for the nudge Breezy and Fishies! It's long over due. See my link below... drbeanie2000 - you better believe it! Yes, I love my kitchen (and the rest of the house) mostly because it's all mine and we are settled. All the little things I agonized and fretted over don't seem so worrisome now. Actually, all the little things I own and will go on the "in the next house" list. ha! All in all, I am happy will all my choices and am thoroughly enjoying it all! What more could I ask for, eh? Comments (13)maxiepines, I didn't follow your thread about cook tops so maybe someone already mentioned this. A downdraft set within a gas cook top pulls at the flames. This isn't an issue with your old electric cook top - no flame. I have a pop-up downdraft for my island's gas cook top. Even though it rises 7" above the cook top, it pulls the flame when turned on high and even on medium, it pulls on the back burners' flames more than I'd like. The downdraft blew out (would that be sucked out?) a burner when it was on low a few times. Today's gas cook tops generally come with automatic re-ignition, which is good, because the only way I know this has happened with my old cook top is when I smell gas. Anyhoo, a downdraft set at the same level as the burners will do this even more than my 7" pop-up does. Can you add a pop-up downdraft, preferably one of the newer models that rises more than 7" above the cook top instead? Stunning photos, as usual, boxerpups. You rock!...See MoreWhite or Black Counters-Need to decide today! Pics
Comments (18)Thanks for all of your input and ideas. Really, I don't know what I would do without this forum!! The good news is that the fabricator agreed to let me choose a different stone at the same price. The bad news is that the only other white he has is something he is calling Artic Ice. I've seen it in other threads called other things, but it has a lot of grey movement in it..something I'm not sure I'm keen on. I love both Bianco Romano and Bianco Antico, but he doesn't carry those. And I'm stuck with this guy since I already plunked down my deposit. He advised me to go with a dark color due to my staining worries and sent me home with a sample of Black Pearl. He said absolute black will be filthy all the time. He also said I can wait until the templating is done on Monday to give him my final choice. He said if I do choose the Artic Ice one, he doesn't want to hear any complaints out of me after its installed. Sounds like something my DH would say. ;) Kaysd-I happen to LOVE Ina's kitchen, and that is what I was thinking when I imagined the white and black kitchen. I've never noticed her floor before though, so thanks for pointing that out. I was going to have the cabinets painted after the counters were in, in case they got nicked or scratched during installation. And I thought I would just pick a white color to compliment whatever stone I use, since it seems there are more options for white paint than there are for stones. Breezygal-The Typhoon Bordeux is lovely. I actually noticed that yesterday at the store. I'm just a neutral girl at heart. My whole wardrobe is white, black and grey. Plus, I figured it's easier to change the paint color in the room and the accessories whenever I want a change. BaileyandBella-How do you find the black pearl, maintenance wise? Sparklekitty-Do you think I should still do the butcher block on the desk even if I choose a black stone (which is what I'm leaning towards at this point). The Costa Esmerelda is gorgeous, but I'm just really a neutral color scheme-y gal. Photo of the Artic Ice sample. I think it is a bit too busy for me and my taste for the whole kitchen. I'd be happy to do this on the island, but I don't know that the fabricator will agree to my mixing the stones since I'm already causing him so much trouble....See MoreCountertop help, please! Need to make a selection by tomorrow.
Comments (25)I’ve looked. I’m not finding any of those “cases” of some soapstone sinks cracking from boiling water. Perhaps you’ll provide examples of ”lots of cases”. I know four people who have soapstone sinks. They empty pots of boiling pasta water into their sinks all the time, without injuring the sinks. When you quote a source that says “...this is an example of how you COULD damage your soapstone.” “Could,” is supposition, not fact. Most stone “experts” have very little experience with soapstone. This, from Bob Vila’s site: “Often used in the construction of fireplaces, soapstone is among the most heat-resistant stone available, so setting a hot pan on the countertop won’t crack the surface.” I’m not looking to get into p***ing match. But, ci_lantro, I was talking about soapstone counters. Soapstone won’t react negatively, when a hot plate, pan or pot is put on it, which is not the case for any other countertop material...especially that plastic Corian, Joe is so fond of. That, is fact....See MoreNicole at home
