Remodeling Design Dilemma Windows

Need help with off-centered dining room!

My wife and I are about to embark on a renovation. We will be flipping our dining room and kitchen. The new dining room (old kitchen) will be smaller, 12x10. I have never noticed it before but our window not centered on the wall in this room. Symmetry is important for me. Less so for my wife; she just wants a new, big kitchen! The distance between the wall and the edge of window opening is 27in on the right and 37in on the left. The window opening is 52in wide.

I know I could widen the window to center it but that is the most expensive option. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts? I was thinking maybe of reducing the window width by 10in to center the window. I also see that there is 3in of framing around the window. Perhaps the new windows could be slightly less wide and positioned slightly to the left?

If you do go with a smaller window, then I would do a single-hung window.

Is the window your only source of natural light in that room? If so, then I would really consider increasing the window size to make it symmetrical. What is the view from the window?

We have asymmetery in our dining room bc our fireplace is not centered. We had the choice of centering the chandelier in the room or putting it directly in front of the fireplace, making the chandelier not centered in the room. We ended up placing the chandelier in front of the fireplace, but the table is centered in the room. Nobody notices, and I don't either unless I happen to be working on a project in the room. ;) In your case, I'd center the chandelier and medallion in the ceiling relative to the fixed elements in the room. It will be much more noticeable to not have the chandelier centered in your ceiling that your table not centered under the chandelier since there is a separation of visual space between the chandelier and your table. IMHO. Good luck!

yes its done. if you dont want to move the ceiling electrical box right away, 'to do a dry run' you can swag a chandelier to be over your off center table.

^agree that you can use window treatments to soften the asymmetry - the table likely won’t be centered in the room anyway bc of the stairs? I would leave the window alone

This is the only natural light in the room but the current plan is to center and enlarge the doorway between the kitchen and dining room so there will be increased light from the new kitchen, which has abundant natural light. Another thought I had was to slightly decrease the width of the window and cut down so the window is taller. No structural work involved there but there would be masonry work and I have a very symmetrical 1930s colonial house. A taller window may look odd on the outside.

Floor plan is below. Ignore the dimensions listed for the kitchen because they are not accurate.

We plan on replacing our dining room table with one of the following. I like the bigger table more but think the smaller table is probably the better choice here.
