Japanese maples near water?

I have a large swale that leads to a storm grate where it lets water runoff from my yard and there is a spot on the slope of the swale, not in, I’m thinking of putting a Japanese maple in. It will be planted on a slope so drainage would be good, my only question is will the roots avoid any areas that are overly moist or have water in them? In my case is inside the swale. If it does I was thinking of planting a fast growing cultivar, as this is for privacy. Or if Japanese maples won’t work, maybe a dappled willow?
