Phased Landscaping / Pool Installation Question

Hi all - Hope you're doing well. I wanted to get your advice on my pool installation plans. I'd like to install a pool in 3-5 years, but I'm also planning to add trees and plants from our landscape design this year (see attached 3D pictures).

Could planting the trees now cause problems when it's time to install the pool? Also, just to note, I've already installed the white fence.

YES. Depending on the depth of the pool the excavator will need a lot of space to get the hole dug. There will be a lot of dirt to be removed from you yard, trucks to remove the dirt, concrete trucks to bring in the concrete. ie much large vehicle activity.

While they may be able to avoid the trees, they will cause a lot of problems to the construction effort.

If the can be avoided their root system will be damaged possibly killing the trees.

Before you do any more you need to talk to a contractor and get and estimate for the pool. In this way you can find out if the pool can be constructed in the area you placed it in your computer. While you don't have to proceed with the pool at this time, you will have an idea if your plan is realistic, considering the space and soil types.

Speaking from my experience I would hold off on planting trees. I had a pool installed at my former home 3 years after the home was built, it looked like a bomb had been detonated in my yard during the construction of the pool.

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

Well we are still receiving ideas, numbers, and plans and had a pool builder give us a bit of another spin to the others so I wanted to raise the questions to the forum. We have not yet decided what we are doing but since this is different than the others, I figured Id send it to the board for comments. We are curious about this equipment as all others were Jandy products. The pool itself would be a 14 x 24 w/ 3 fountain lines on a baja shelf. More of a social pool as it would only be to 5.5 feet or so. Equipment as follows: Shotcrete 1 skimmer Dual Main drain system w/ 3 returns Standard 6 x 6 waterline tile Colored concrete coping (we are not sure about this as we want flagstone but they said it would look great with this specific architectural design) 1.5hp pump Pebbletec (they quoted us pricing for stonescape however they recommend pebble over it due to our applicators in the area). Pentair clean and clear filter Polaris 280 with booster pump Duel time with freze contractol Aquareite salt sytems 400 w pool light (they said that is the watts they recommend for the shapeseems low). We do not like colored lights. Some Questions: They are saying that they prefer the pool equipment to be 30 ft from the shallow end and that is at our bedroom which is completely out of the question for us. Wed like it run about 100 feet out back off the deep end or at the basement side of the house which goes down the yard a bit. That side is also where the electrical is. Do we have any challenges with that other than cost? This was a lesser cost option to our original 17 x 32 foot plan w/ Jandy equipment so we are wondering if we have any issues. The design is pretty neat and more like a "dip" water feature. For a 24 x 14 pool, wed prefer a "real" deep end.is that too small to get a deep end? They have in the contract that the landscape will do the drainageis that normal? They suggested that in the middle fountain line they install a urn which we would purchase. Are there certain issues that we should be aware of or certain fountain/urn styles that we should go with given it will sit in a pool and sit in salt water? This company is more a "boutique" builder however the PM has over 20 years experience (so we are told) and are able to a bit more competitive on pricing and our budget is extremely tight for what we want. Their pricing on pebbletec was more than others but overall the budget was less.but then again it is a smaller pool with different equipment. Your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also if we should ask anything specific to them.

renovxpt, I agree that the original plan was great. The couple of concerns that we had was the fact that crossing stepping stones in the waterfall to get to the lower deck might be a bit of obstacle, especially when the kids grandparents are visiting. I guess maybe you have to live on a hill like this to appreciate why I asked Chris to wrap the deck all the way around, and to include a raised wall edge. For one thing, I wanted an easy way to walk around the pool to retrieve pool toys or balls - without having to change into rock climbing gear. You don't have any idea how many basketballs I've climbed down that hill for. Once they start rolling they're going all the way to the bottom, which is over 100 yards of tough climbing. And secondly, I wanted to draw a clear barrier between the deep woods and the pool area. Inside that wall there can be sunscreen, pool towels, and margaritas. Outside that wall there will be deer, raccoons, poison ivy, and rattlesnakes.

I agree with K Laurence. I often use the similar phrase mentioned about a bomb going off in the backyard to my clients. War zone, missile testing site, etc...

The proposed plants/plant bed are too close in proximity to the pool to move freely. The excavated and disturbed area always goes beyond the pool itself. Room is needed for heavy equipment and the like. Grades may change that will impact plant bed heights.

If you did decide to plant prior to the build, plants would have to temporarily transplant and then replant.

Your lawn will get torn up from the access point in the front the house all the way to dig area. If your driveway is part of the access, and it's in good shape, ask the PB to put down protective mats or plywood.

If your driveway is in poor condition, don't replace it until all activity is completed.

Pretend that instead of inserting a pool in your backyard, a nextdoor neighbor is building a new house in your back yard, starting with digging a gigantic new foundation. That is essentially what is happening. Can you imagine instructing a crew of comstruction workers to not disturb and work around your plantings? It is never going to happen. Their priority is to dig this foundation. It will not be a delicate process.

Consider raised beds on the perimeter..this will avoid roots causing damage to the pool..and allow smaller plants with smaller root systems…bamboo works well in these contained areas and some varieties grow very tall..IMO …big trees could be a big mistake on this size lot..

Another problem could develop if your big trees …on the property line ….send big roots into the neighbors yard…which would definitely need to be removed when/if they decide to install border plantings

Don't waste money on landscaping if you are going to install a pool.

We built our pool while building our house and the pool construction just adds a whole other layer of construction mess, affecting access to the area, electrical and plumbing.
