What can I put here for privacy?
Comments (19)I came across the following website that has info and picts....easy to use, too. http://www.huntersville.org/interactive%20ordinance/Zoning_TOCshrub.htm. We are having the same privacy issue since our back neighbor's huge cedar tree is quickly biting the dust. On our side of the fence, I planted a short row of native bamboo which I love (I also love weeping willows and have planted those). I do not know if the bamboo will take hold or not--I would like to see a small "forest" eventually! Serenity and movement. Lots of people on Craig's List, propagate and sell bamboo so it is easy to find. If that does not work, my next endeavor is wax myrtle,...See MoreWhat privacy tree would work well here? (pics)
Comments (21)Wow, thanks for the replies everyone. To answer some of your questions, there is no bed on the other side of the fence, and I don't think the neighbors are interested in planting anything there (the fence is on the property line). Even though the space is small I'd rather keep things on my side anyways, although going over there to prune or maintain something wouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure about roses on ropes, or the use of tall trellis's as far as the town is concerned, but that is something I can look into. My statements on Hydrangea's being slow growers was form an article I read online, so I'm somewhat glad to hear you guys disagree. Perhaps these or other "standard" may be an option? Unfortunately the other side of the driveway extends right up to my house, so planting something under the kitchen windows is not an option. I'm curious your overall opinion on shrubs that can be pruned into trees, such at the Mock Orange (Pittosporum ‘Variegate’), Christmas Berry (Photinia fraseri ‘Birmingham’), or Carolina Laurel Cherry (Prunus caroliniana ‘Compact’). Would any of these work, and how hard would they be to maintain? Another article I found also recommended the Pyrus calleyrana ‘Chanticleer’, and stated the roots wouldn't interfere with the driveway, but I have also read mixed reviews on those too. Any comments? I do like the idea of using a combination of narrow evergreens and some deciduous plants, which leads me to the question of... which ones? Thanks Again......See MorePossible tornado here overnight
Comments (13)I'm glad you're all okay. It could have been worse, you know, especially coming at night (I hate that you cannot see them in the dark) and in a month where tornadoes are not overly common. At least you got rain. We are still waiting. Endlessly waiting--no, not for a tornado. Just waiting for rain. We have thunder and lightning. You'd think that any storm that would give us thunder and lightning right over our house would at least give us some rain. We get tornado info too many ways---from our NOAA All-Hazards radio with an alert that goes off like a very loud alarm and scares you to death, to phone apps, and phone alerts from our own county's Dispatch center. If there's a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, I think the Dispatch center only sends it on our phone app, but if there is a Tornado Warning, they set off our fire pagers. Each system seems to go off on its own timing, so you don't get them all at the same second---they keep going off for a while, which I guess is good, because it keeps you from falling back asleep until the danger has has time to clear the area. We also have a dog alarm feature who sleeps on the floor beside Tim. With every loud crash-bang of thunder, Jet thinks we are under attack, awakes barking and runs around the bedroom barking back at the thunder. This is a relatively recent development as he has aged. When he was younger, thunder didn't set him off that way....See Morehow would you improve privacy here
Comments (8)Yes the top tree is evergreen. There is a second little one in the bottom bed. It is not evergreen. Of course neither is the bitter cherry. I really want the privacy in summer when we are all outside hence me considering the bitter cherry, which we already have. The other challenge is there are two large stumps in the beds that make planting complicated. It’s also relatively close to the house so want to be aware of the roots. Do you have any other suggestions? I don’t love the one you shared unfortunately. Yes PNW Vancouver...See Morebtydrvn
