I think I might have been still a child when I read a story about a woman --I think she may have been Swedish-- who took her daughter to a hospital for a hand wound and pointed out to the doctor that one of the fingers was not wrinkling from water exposure. Supposedly, this spurred figuring out the mechanism behind finger wrinkling.

matthias, one of the tests for nerve damage in fingers and hands is the water/wrinkle test.
